Writing an Objective summary Using the 5 rules

Let’s Review the 5 RuLes 1. Same Order (if it’s not for research purposes) 2. Main Ideas Only (no random details) 3. New Words (paraphrase the information) 4. Shorter (duh, it’s a summary) 5. No Opinions (remember, this is OBJECTIVE)

Guidelines for Writing Remember to make your objective summary in PARAGRAPH FORM. You want to use complete sentences. Avoid any opinionated information, such as, “This story is very cool, interesting, scary, etc.”

Model: Little Red Riding Hood

Step 1: Look for Key Points in the Story On my post- it notes I am going to jot down 3 major things that happened in the story “Little Red Riding Hood”

1. Red goes out to her grandmother’s house to deliver her some food . 3 Main Plot Points 1. Red goes out to her grandmother’s house to deliver her some food . 2. Along the way, Red sees a wolf. 3. Red gets to her grandma’s house and sees her grandma looking differently than normal.

Beginning my summary… In the fairy tale, “Little Red Riding Hood,” the character Little Red is a sweet, innocent girl who goes walking in the forest to deliver her grandmother some food. Is this an okay 1st sentence?

Beginning My Summary.. In the fairy tale, “Little Red Riding Hood,” the character Red is told to go deliver some food to her grandmother. Her grandmother lives on the other side of the forest in a little cottage. What about now?

Summary: In the fairy tale, “Little Red Riding Hood,” the character Red is told to deliver some food to her grandmother. When she arrives to her grandmother’s house, Red notices that her grandmother’s appearance has changed into a big, scary wolf. Also, along the way, Red had seen a wolf, who wanted to talk to her.

Good Summary: In the fairy tale, “Little Red Riding Hood,” the character Red is told to deliver some food to her grandmother. Along the way, she meets a wolf who wants to ask her about what she has and where she is going. Red tells him all of the information he asks and then continues on her way. She stops once to pick some flowers for her grandmother. Once she arrives to her grandmother’s cottage, she enters and notices that her grandmother appears differently than normal.

You are going to write an objective summary of “Like the Sun” You will be working with 1 other partner (your shoulder partner) Both partners should have this on their own papers.
