What is social network? A social network is a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes", which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige. -Wikipedia

An Analysis of Activities in Facebook Khanh Nguyen Duc A. Tran Contact network versus activity network: are they the same or different? is it true that a user with many contacts also participates in many activities? does a user communicate with all of its contacts as often, or with just a few of them? Activity distribution: how activities are distributed among users? is there a certain set of users who participate most actively in the network? User similarity versus activity: can we infer user similarity from activity and vice versa? do most activities take place between “similar” people or “different” people? between a popular person and a less popular person?

Social Network Analysis of Online Marketplaces Pushpa Kumar Kang Zhang What are the typical seller-buyer relationships? What is the buyer’s loyalty (buying the same kind of items from the same seller)? What categories of goods are popular? What are the correlations among the number of buyers, the number of for sale and the number of sold items? Measurements of networks relating to centralities.

Social Network Analysis of Online Marketplaces Pushpa Kumar Kang Zhang

Summary of findings from past studies of Social Networks Several studies show that node degree distribution follows a power- law, both in real and online social networks. Social media networks are large scale-free networks which are small world networks with large cluster coefficients and short average path lengths. Most social network participants are often inactive, while few key users generate a large portion of traffic. Probability that a new edge of u is placed to a node v of degree d(v) is proportional to its degree

Summary of findings from past studies of Social Networks the intensity of message posting involving two users does not depend clearly on their degree similarity or difference. It was found that correlation between an user’s popularity and activity is based on the number of messages posted to other walls and received from other users, but not based on how often he or she writes to own wall. Undirected networks are more resilient to the changes in the network compared to the directed networks. Social network analysis can also be used in solving problems in task oriented networks and online market places.

Missing in previous studies Google Plus being a new social network, it gives researchers an opportunity to study, understand, analyze its features. What are effects of a directed network? -indegree, out degree, reciprocity How resilient is it compared to the undirected networks like facebook? What is the clustering coefficient? What are the hubs, authorities? Is power law observed?
