Animated cartoons exhibit the design principle of Movement! Motion or movement in a visual image occurs when objects seem to be moving in a visual image. In an animation, the lines and shapes, along with the changes in value of the drawings appear to create movement, as they are a series of individual frames. This provides a sense of movement through time.

Cartooning and Animation During the late seventeenth century, The word cartoon was adapted from the Italian cartone, which means “ pasteboard ”. Pasteboards were large pieces of paper used for rough sketches. Burlington House Cartoon, By Leonardo da Vinci

Renaissance “Cartoons” The drawings were made to transfer the images to the painting surface in one of two ways. In the first the cartoon acted as a type of stencil, thousands of small holes pricked the edges of each line and a bag of charcoal dust was “pounced” upon the cartoon. In the second the cartoon acted as carbon paper, the back of the image was coated with charcoal dust and the image was carefully traced. Since either process was messy and damaged the original paper, very few of these survive. Those that remain were typically created for paintings that weren’t executed. Example of muralists using a cartoon

Ancient Greek and Egyptian artists created narrative art scenes in registers, similar to today ’ s comic strips Krater, second half of 8th century B.C.; Greek The front and back of the Narmer Palette. Egypt (ca BCE)

Huang Gongwang ( ), Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, detail Chinese artists created continous scenes on scrolls

America's earliest cartoons were political. The first cartoon appeared in Ben Franklin's newspaper The Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754.

ANIMATION Facts James Stuart Blackton makes the HUMOROUS PHASES OF FUNNY FACES. Usually considered the first known example of animation as some of the drawn sequences are shot frame by frame. Blackton used a combination of blackboard and chalk drawing and cutouts to achieve animation Emile Cohl, ( ) France, makes his first film, FANTASMAGORIE. This film is considered by many to be the first animated film STEAMBOAT WILLIE was the first successful sound animated film; it made Mickey Mouse an international star, and launched the Disney studio of today. From A RATHER INCOMPLETE BUT STILL FASCINATING HISTORY OF ANIMATION By Dan McLaughlin Copyright 2001

Animation Cel The character is painted on clear celluloid. The lines are traced onto the front side of the cel, and the colors are painted in a smooth coat on the back side, eliminating any brush strokes. The painted cel is then overlaid on the background and photographed in succession to form each single frame of an animated film. When completed, the frames give the illusion of movement in the completed film. From the Plausible Impossible segment of "The Wonderful World of Color “

Is it true that The Simpsons no longer use cels to create the show ? Yes. After season 13 (2002), The Simpsons have stopped creating the show with traditional hand drawn animation cels. The show has now switched over to computer animation. This makes the value of original Simpsons artwork even greater. _simpsons_cel.shtml Back of cel Front of cel
