Presentation transcript:

1. Why is the gift of prophecy better than the gift of tongues? Prophecy benefits all 2. What is the point of comparison to musical instruments? To foreign languages? If it is not understood, it is just noise 3. What advice did Paul give the Corinthians about the public use of the gift of tongues? (13- 19) Use it only it if benefits others. They were using it to show off.

4. We cannot be accused of misusing the gift of tongues in our public worship. Yet the principle of wanting to speak clearly and understandably applies to us. Are there some elements of our worship service that a visitor may not understand? What can we do to help? Answers will vary What must we balance?

5. What direction does Paul give in the following verses? Verse 26 Use gifts to strengthen others Verses Only a few should prophesy. Verses Be orderly and defer to each other Verses Remember the roles God has assigned to men and women

6. Who should be the first to acknowledge that what Paul said was true? Those who prophesy would agree that Paul was speaking God’s word. 7. What is the key to God-pleasing worship? (40) It must be orderly

8. What should a single woman or widow in your congregation do if she wished to ask a question or to give input to church leaders? Answers will vary 9. what are some examples of decent and orderly procedures in our worship? Liturgy, ushers, communion procedure, etc.

1. What are the basics of the Gospel? Christ died, was buried, rose from the dead and appeared to many. 2. What proof does Paul give us for the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead? He appeared to Peter, to the 12, to over 500 of which some are still living, to James and all the Apostles and finally to Paul Throughout 1 Corinthians Paul addressed problems in the congregation. What problem did Paul address in this chapter? (verse 12) Some said there was no resurrection

4. What are the consequences of not believing in the resurrection? This would include a denial of Christ’s resurrection 5. What are the consequences of not believing in Jesus’ resurrection? No salvation, were are liars, faith futile, sin still clings to us, baptism worthless, death and sin unconquered, our suffering for being a Christian is in vain

Verse 27 quotes Psalm 8:6. Which is the better translation? NIV 11 “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?[c]c 5 You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels[e] and crowned them[f] with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their[g] feet:defg

ESV – “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings[b] and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;b HCSB - When I observe Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You set in place, 4 what is man that You remember him, the son of man that You look after him? 5 You made him little less than God[c][d] and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him lord over the works of Your hands; You put everything under his feet:[e]cde

6. How is a Christian funeral service different from other funeral services? Focus on Christ not people, joy, better food, etc.

7. Paul argues that just because our bodies appear humble now does not mean they will always be that way. How does he make that point through pictures of the following: A seed We pant a “dead” seed and a very different looking thing grows Different kinds of animals God made different kinds of creatures, so he can remake us The varying splendor of the heavenly bodies He has the power to recreate us The natural body vs. the spiritual body Adam gave us a body that lives under sin, Jesus one that will live in perfection.

8. What will happen to us on the last day? Our present mortal, perishable bodies will be made immortal and imperishable 9. How did Jesus remove the threat of the law and the guilt of sin? By fulfilling the law and bearing the sin of the world

10. To labor in the Lord’s vineyard is often a difficult work. In view of the resurrection, what does Paul urge us to do? Stand firm and always devote yourselves to the work of the Lord. The Christian Church is the only organization that exists for the benefit of others.
