2 Soldering Basics Soldering is a process used to join piping and tubing to fittings. It is used primarily in plumbing and heating systems using copper and brass piping and fittings. Soldering, often called soft soldering, is done at temperatures under 800°F; usually in the 361°F to 500°F range. Soldering is a process used to join piping and tubing to fittings. 3 Brazing Basics Brazing requires higher temperatures (over 800° F), is often called silver brazing, and is similar to soldering. It is used to join tubing and piping in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The higher temperatures are required due to the different combinations of alloys used in the filler metals. 5 5 Soldering/Brazing When two lengths of tubing are joined, a fitting or coupling may be placed between them into which each pipe slides. A clearance is required for the tubing to slide into the coupling or fitting. A filler metal must be used to fill this clearance. The filler metal actually adheres to the tubing and fitting to be joined as it fills the gap. Only the filler metal melts. 8 8 Soldering/Brazing Heat Sources Propane. butane, air-acetylene or oxyacetylene torches are the most commonly used sources of heat when soldering or brazing. A propane or butane torch can be ignited easily and adjusted to the type and size of joint being soldered; various tips are available. 9 Air Acetylene Torch Kit Air Acetylene torch kit – The air acetylene torch kit consists of a pressurized tank of acetylene, an acetylene regulator, a hose, a torch handle and a torch tip. Various sizes of standard tips are available.

10 Air Acetylene Torch Kit When attaching the hose connection, the red hose is attached to the acetylene regulator with left- handed threads. The green hose is attached to the oxygen regulator with right- handed threads. The torch body is then attached to the hoses and the appropriate tip to the torch. 13 Safety Precautions Safety Precaution: Be sure all connections are free from dirt, dust, grease and oil. Oxygen can produce an explosion when in contact with grease or oil. A reverse flow valve should be used somewhere in the hose. These valves allow the gas to flow in one direction only, preventing the two gases from mixing in the hose.
