About the Author... Jonathan Swift ( ) “Irish cleric, political pamphleteer, satirist” Born in Dublin, Ireland (Fatherless) Raised by 3-Uncles and educated from an early age Attended Trinity College (NOT A GREAT STUDENT)

In 1689, Moved to England and began working under Sir William Temple (For 10 years) Temple was a diplomat and granted Swift access to a vast amount of reading material Swift was a member of the whig party (country party) opposition of the Tories (court party) He switched parties before his death, so his political views are a bit BLURRY!!!

Excerpt from “A Modest Proposal” “Fourthly, The constant breeders, beside the gain of eight shillings sterling per annum by the sale of their children, will be rid of the charge of maintaining them after the first year. Fifthly, This food would likewise bring great custom to taverns; where the vintners will certainly be so prudent as to procure the best receipts for dressing it to perfection, and consequently have their houses frequented by all the fine gentlemen, who justly value themselves upon their knowledge in good eating: and a skillful cook, who understands how to oblige his guests, will contrive to make it as expensive as they please.”
