The Early Years During the war for American Independence, Britain's advantage was its strong navy and army. Britain had the disadvantage of fighting far from home. The American forces lacked experience, weapons and money. American Independence Army Navy

The Loyalists called Tories Those Americans who remained loyal to Britain and opposed war for independence. One in five Americans were considered a Loyalist.
