Conjunction Junction What’s Your Function? Functions at their finest…

What is a Function? (Mathematically speaking…) A function is a one-to-one correspondence For every x, there is a unique value for y

What is a Function? (From a Girl’s point of view…) X can only have one Y value X (boys) can only have one Y (girlfriend) For instance X 0 2 3 6 7 Y 1 4 6 3 8

Why boys can’t “cheat”… Boys are not allowed to “cheat” on girls (x can only have one y) This is illegal X 0 3 3 6 7 Y 1 4 6 3 8 The same boy (x) has two different girls (y).

What does this look like as a graph?

Why girls can “cheat”… Y (girls) can have more than one X (boys) This is legal X 0 1 -1 2 -2 Y 0 1 1 4 4 The same girl (Y) has two different boys (X)

What this looks like as a graph

Vertical Line Test If you draw vertical lines through the graph and the line only crosses the graph once, it IS a function. If you draw vertical lines through the graph and the line crosses the graph more than once, it is NOT a function.

Let’s Practice! Is it a function?
