Where: Richmond CA & LHNC “Unfolding Stories”

Richmond, CA Birthed when a railroad company and a refinery decided Richmond was a strategic location Founded in 1905, the city grew from 2,150 people to 23,600 people in 1940 as other companies began to establish themselves in Richmond. WWII began and the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards sprang up on Richmond’s south shoreline in 1941.

Richmond CA The population boomed from 23,600 in 1940 to 93,700 in 1943 and finally peaking at 101,500 in The Great Migration: people from the south, southwest, and midwest moved to Richmond for war time jobs. The war ended and the shipyards closed in Many other jobs left and many people left the city. The population dropped to 71,900 in 1960.

Richmond CA In 1976 Hilltop mall opened and downtown Richmond’s major retailers - Macy’s, JC Penny’s, Thrifty, & Woolworth’s – left for greener pastures. The population continued to drop until the late 80s. Over the past 20 years the Latino & Asian population has grown in Richmond while the white and black population has declined. Richmond has become one of the most racially and ethnically diverse cities.

Living Hope Neighborhood Church Began in 1949 as Rheem Ave Baptist Church and the founding pastor was there for 21 years! In the 1960s the sanctuary was added. From 1970 to 1990 there were several pastors with shorter stints. The church changed its name to Judson Memorial Baptist Church new vision to engage youth and reflect the city’s diversity in the church.

Living Hope Neighborhood Church Between 1999 and 2007 the church had several short term and interim pastors. The congregation dwindled and considered closing the church. 2 Big Events: 1) The Saturday ministry is born. 2) The Church is relaunched as Living Hope Neighborhood Church on Easter 2009.

Acts 17:16-27 He observed and learned his cultural context God stirred his spirit by His Spirit God had sovereignly brought different peoples to that city. God directed the gospel message contextually. God was drawing people to Himself.
