1 Winter Canola Variety Trials and the Winter of Michael Stamm and Scott Dooley Kansas State University, Manhattan Josh Bushong Oklahoma State University, Stillwater
2 Summary of First true test of winter hardiness since acres have grown significantly in the southern Great Plains First true test of winter hardiness for many of the varieties we currently grow Yields were reduced because of a lack of plant biomass produced in the spring We have a better idea of where varieties should or should not be grown
Importance of Winter Survival Winter survival begins with getting a good stand Low temperatures reduce leaf area, stored N, and water availability Better survival equals a greater leaf expansion rate in the spring, greater photosynthetic activity, improved weed control, and balanced maturity at harvest Yield is largely impacted by plant density and is most stable when plants are evenly distributed within the row and across the field 3

16 Take home messages Diversified cultivar selection is critical A variety will only show maximum performance when managed appropriately Use multiple years and locations to make an informed variety selection Interest in the region is growing, and so is investment in cultivar development
