(1 Tim 5:1 NKJV) Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, (1 Tim 5:2 NKJV) older women as mothers, younger as sisters, with all purity. (Gal 6:1 NKJV) Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Lesson 6--Slide 5 How are older women (specifically widows) to be treated? Which widows, based on need, are to be given special treatment by the church? (1 Tim 5:3 NKJV) Honor widows who are really widows. (1 Tim 5:16 NKJV) If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows. (1 Tim 5:5 NKJV) Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day. “Widow” means “having a deficiency.”

(1 Tim 5:3 NKJV) Honor widows who are really widows. (1 Tim 5:16 NKJV) If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows. The special qualifications given here indicate more. Likely they imply “fully supported.” What are the implications of verse 16 on the acceptability of a church supporting widows today (e.g., a widows’ home or orphans’ home) ?

(1 Tim 5:10 NKJV) well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work. l These are examples of good works, not a checklist of specific requirements.

(1 Tim 5:11-12 NKJV) But refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, having condemnation because they have cast off their first faith. (1 Tim 5:13 NKJV) And besides they learn to be idle, wan- dering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. What were to be the goals of the younger widows? (1 Tim 5:17 NKJV) Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. “Elder” is from the same Greek word (presbuvtero") as “older men” in verse 1. (1 Tim 5:18 NKJV) For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.” (Deu 25:4 NKJV) “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain. (Luke 10:7 NKJV) “And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. [Note: The phrase in Luke 10:7 is also the same in Greek as I Tim. 5:18. Also, recall II Pet. 3:15-16]

Lesson 6--Slide 17 What conclusion can be drawn from verse 23 about using alcoholic beverages? (1 Tim 5:23 NKJV) No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities. That Timothy had to be instructed to use this substance. That the allowed use was specifically for a medicinal purpose. Note: We cannot infer any alcoholic content from the word used. The Greek oi\no" refers to grape juice in any form. Note: Grape juice (unfermented) was so healthful that it was used for illnesses. Lesson 6--Slide 18 From Chapter 5 Christians are to encourage/exhort one another, as they would a beloved family member. Widows are to be fully supported by the church only if they meet need, age, marital, and behavioral/reputation standards. Older men who rule are to be given special honor, but not exempted from correction. The church should make careful examination of those given special visibility in the church in order to identify both good and bad qualities and reputations. What to Remember.

C. Cook, The Bible Commentary, (Vol. IX, page 786) says: “neither having been divorced and married again, nor (probably) having remarried after the death of her first husband.”

T. Robertson, Word Pictures in the New Testament (p. 585) says: “Widows on this list must not be married a second time.” Albert Barnes, Notes on the Old and New Testaments (Vol. 24, p. 178) says: “The correct interpretation probably is, to refer it to one who had been married but once, and who, after her husband had died, had remained a widow.” “I cannot doubt, therefore, that he meant to exclude those from the number here referred to who had been married the second time.”
