D6.2: Categorization of coastal areas using coastal transects Product: Software to display an ‘image’ of a coastal cross-section, through comparison of information about coastal areas provided by users with those in the model. Delivery date: August 31, 2006 Tasks accomplished: Conceptual model developed; Methodological framework finalized; Preliminary data collected and analyzed; Expert choice exercise (for weighting of attributes) conducted; and 1 st Draft of the functional specification document prepared. To do: Development of website user-interface, database storage and computation, and resulting images. Potential publication/dissemination: Visualising the coast: coastal typology and cross-sections; Launching of the Coastal Transects Analysis Model at CZAP06

Logistics flow diagram 2 MS Access Relational Dbase – Use ‘look-up’ table to match data inputs to a coastal transect type 3 Output of Survey – Showing activity icons on the coastal transect base map 4 Download Model - Coastal Transect and Associated Data 1 Online User Survey Input (.NET / MS Access) 5 GIS Portal - showing related Coastal Transect types around the world

Step 1: Website user-interface Step-by-step online coastal survey accessible through the Internet; Three sets of key variables: physical, habitats and activities; and Writes directly to Access DB through.NET Technology

Step 2: Database storage & computations Carefully designed relational database (MS-Access); Physical and habitat data inputs are ‘coded’ to determine coastal transect ‘base map’ (pre-determined in the look-up table); Each activity data input is given an icon and a fixed co- ordinate for display on the base map; and All data are stored in tables for future classification of coastal transects.

Determining the base map based on physical and habitat variables PhysicalHabitatsActivities Shape Bottom type Upwelling Reefs Mangroves Others: - Seagrass - Salt marsh Small-scale fishing Shrimp farming Fish culture Tourism Urban development Large-scale fishing combinations

Weighting of physical variables using AHP

Weighting of habitats using AHP

Step 3: Survey result Completed survey will yield a resulting coastal transect image that includes one base map and activity icon(s); Text boxes with description of key features of the coastal transect will be provided; Link to GIS portal to display similar coastal areas around the world.

Step 4: Downloadable coastal transect data Download text versions of the completed survey or model coast information Download pictures or maps of similar coasts

Step 5: View online map of related coastlines Link to interactive map showing similar coastal areas; Hyperlink to partners, associations or regional coastal initiatives.

From here to August 31, 2006 Finalize the functional specification document (June 30, 2006); List of terms and preparation of text boxes (June 30, 2006); Prepare ‘base maps’ (with icons and co- ordinates (June 30, 2006); Draft alpha version ready for internal review of (July 31, 2006); Alpha version ready for launching at CZAP06 (August 31, 2006).
