Parade A small country has only 7 athletes: Amy, Barney, Cath, Dylan, Ed, Francis and Gemma, to take part in the parade at the end of the games. The parade rules state that the athletes must walk in 3 pairs behind a single athlete bearing their nation’s flag. The order within each pair is unimportant, so AB is the same as BA. How many different ways can the 7 athletes be arranged?

Parade There are 7 choices for the first athlete. For each choice we now need to work out the number of ways to arrange the remaining six athletes into 3 pairs. There are 6 choices for the first athlete, and then 5 for their partner, which makes 30. However, since order within the pair does not matter, this reduces to 15.

Parade For each of these 15 ways, there are 4 ways of choosing the next athlete, then 3 for their partner. This gives us 4×3÷2=6 The final pair is then fixed as the two remaining athletes. This means that there are 15×6=90 ways to choose the 3 pairs for each of the 7 leaders, so there are 7×90=630 arrangements.
