Philippians Class Schedule

Philippians 2: But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; 26 because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. 29 Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; 30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me.

Christ 7a but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, Paul 17 But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, Timothy 22b that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father. Epaphroditus 30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient … Philippians Chapter 2 Pattern of sacrificial services

Philippians 2: But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and (your) minister to my need; 26 because he (Epaphroditus) was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he (Epaphroditus) was sick. 27 For indeed he (Epaphroditus) was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him (Epaphroditus), and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I have sent him (Epaphroditus) all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. 29 Receive him (Epaphroditus) then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; 30 because he (Epaphroditus) came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me.

25 But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; Who was Epaphroditus ? I thought (considered) it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus necessary - anankaios - necessary by a moral or spiritual need – see Phil 1:24, 2 Cor 9:5 Why did Paul think it was necessary ?

25 But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; Epaphroditus 5 point resume my brother – adelphos - Lit: from the same womb my fellow worker - coworker, companion in labor my fellow soldier - suffering hardship for Christ your messenger - apostolos – see Acts 14:4 &14 your minister to my need – Lit: servant of God to Paul

26 because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. because (since) – what does this point back to in v25 ? he was longing for you all longing - epipotheō - to long for greatly, to yearn see Phil 1:8, 1Thess 3:6 (he) was distressed - adēmoneō - to be much troubled, distressed see Matt 26:37, Mark 16:33 because you had heard that he was sick sick - astheneō - without strength, powerless, sick see 2 Tim 4:20, Mark 6:56

27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. For indeed he was sick to the point of death Lit: coming near to death but God had mercy on him mercy - eleos - manifestation of pity; it assumes need on the part of him who receives it, and resources adequate to meet the need on the part of him who shows it Vine not on him only but also on me so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow

28 Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly more eagerly - spoudaiōs - signifies with haste or with zeal, earnestly see 2 Tim 1:17 so that – two point purpose when you see him again you may rejoice I may be less concerned (sorrowful) about you

29 Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; Two instructions to the Philippians receive him then in the Lord with all joy receive - receive, accept, entertain - see Rom 16:2 hold men like him in high regard high regard - entimos - held in honor, precious, dear see Luke 14:8, 1 Peter 2:4

30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me. because – this is why you should carry out Paul’s words he came close to death for the work of Christ see 1 Cor 15:58, 2 Tim 4:5 risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me complete - anaplēroō - to fill up, fill completely
