Bible Survey - Lamentations Date of Writing: 586 BC

Bible Survey - Lamentations Theme: Mourning Lamentations is a book of mourning over the destruction of the once great city of Jerusalem.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Purpose of Writing: While Lamentations is certainly a song of mourning that is an end unto itself, it is also a statement of confession for sin and worship of God for his holiness in punishing sin. There is also a strong thread of hope in God’s future restoration of his people that runs through this book of sorrow.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Jeremiah as a type of Christ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!” (Matt. 23:37-38)

Bible Survey - Lamentations Making the Most of Punishment 1.Sorrow Over the Pain 2.Recognition That the Punishment is Just 3.Sorrow Over the Sin 4.Hope in God’s Restoration

Bible Survey - Lamentations Sorrow Over the Pain: Lamentations 1:1 How lonely sits the city That was full of people! Lamentations 2:1 How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion With a cloud in His anger!

Bible Survey - Lamentations Sorrow Over the Pain: Lamentations 4:1 How dark the gold has become, How the pure gold has changed!

Bible Survey - Lamentations Recognition that the Punishment is Just: Lamentations 1:18 The LORD is righteous; For I have rebelled against His command.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Recognition that the Punishment is Just: Lamentations 2:17 The LORD has done what He purposed; He has accomplished His word Which He commanded from days of old.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Sorrow Over the Sin: Lamentations 1:8 Jerusalem sinned greatly, Therefore she has become an unclean thing. Lamentations 1:20 See, O LORD, for I am in distress; My spirit is greatly troubled; My heart is overturned within me, For I have been very rebellious.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Sorrow Over the Sin: Lamentations 4:6 For the iniquity of the daughter of my people Is greater than the sin of Sodom. Lamentations 3:42 We have transgressed and rebelled, You have not pardoned.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Hope In God’s Restoration: Lamentations 3:21-25 This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. 22 The LORD'S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him." 25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Hope In God’s Restoration: Lamentations 3:31-33 For the Lord will not reject forever, 32 For if He causes grief, Then He will have compassion According to His abundant lovingkindness. 33 For He does not afflict willingly Or grieve the sons of men.

Bible Survey - Lamentations Place in the Canon: Lamentations serves as a reminder that the justice of God will not sleep forever. He will punish sin and when he does, our only response can be true brokenness and repentance. Historically, Lamentations shows us the fall of Jerusalem. Theologically, it reveals to us the godly response to sin and punishment. Devotionally, it motivates us to respond to our own chastenings in the same way.
