Coastlands School News By the pupils of Coastlands Issue 12: Sept/Oct 2014 Coastlands Cruise Ship Singers Two weeks ago lots of us from Class 2 and 3 went down to Milford Docks to sing for people off a cruise ship. It was a bit mad when we got there because the electrics wouldn’t work. Also there weren’t many passengers around so we ended up singing a few songs with no music and no audience! After that things got better. We sang lots of songs and one of our favourites was ‘Daydream Believer’. There was even a mayor there, but he didn’t talk to us. It was great fun and we’re looking forward to doing it again. COASTLANDS WINS NATIONAL AWARD Earlier this term we had some really exciting news when we found out that our school had won The Guardian Live Better Schools Competition. We all had to design posters showing how we could live more sustainably. Mrs Davies then chose six of the best to enter into the competition. The competition judges were looking for designs that showed originality, creativity and a good understanding of sustainability. The winning posters were designed by Bethany Price, Ollie Warlow, Lily Courie, Caitlyn Hawkins, Jorja Parry and Emilia Clarke. Well done to those children! As the winners we will get £5000 towards a sustainability project and our winning entry will be printed as a pull-out in The Guardian later this month. Marvellous Music Workshop A couple of weeks ago Mr Harries took some of us to a brass music workshop at Sir Thomas Picton School. We saw people playing trumpets, a French horn, a tuba and a trombone. Afterwards we saw them play in a concert where they played songs like ‘Let it Go’ and the music from Harry Potter. It was all very interesting and Mrs Thorpe is hoping that more people will want to play brass instruments now and play in the school orchestra. Don’t forget the orchestra is on Thursdays 3:30-4:30. If you are having instrument lessons in school you really should go along. (You might even get a free biscuit!) Urdd Football Tournament Recently lots of the children from Class 3 went to the Urdd football tournament in Tenby. We had a great day. The boys were disappointed because they didn’t win many matches. However they did win against Golden Grove, which is a much bigger school than ours. The girls did really well, winning some matches and drawing against the county champions, Stepaside. Let’s Glow For It! Last Friday we had a fun time when we all dressed up in bright, neon clothes to celebrate Let’s Glow Day. We did it to raise awareness for blind and partially sighted people. We had a special assembly to show our costumes. Mr Harries was even wearing neon legwarmers and a headband!

Shakespeare Schools Festival As most of you know, we are doing our own production of Romeo and Juliet for the Shakespeare Schools Festival. On Friday 26 th September we went to a cast workshop in the Merlin Theatre to show Med and Elaine our Romeo and Juliet so far. They gave us very useful tips on our work. We also played some games e.g. in one of them we made a circle and if Med said ‘zap’ to someone they would duck. The two people beside them would then make guns with their hands and say ‘bang‘ to one another and the one to say ‘bang‘ the quickest would win. It was really fun! Performance night, which we all dread and look forward to, is on Friday 21 st November. The whole thing starts at 7.00pm. The tickets are all sold out, but if you haven’t bought any don’t worry we might be getting some more to be sold!!! Nep-tunes. Where do Martians go for a drink? To a mars bar. Shakespeare Strikes Again! On National Poetry Day recently we all came to school dressed as characters from Shakespeare’s plays. There were some amazing costumes, including Puck, Cleopatra, Juliet, Romans and ghosts. Well done to everyone who got dressed up. POLICE VISIT Two weeks ago we had a visit from WPC Thomas who came to talk to us about good and bad behaviour. She helped us to see that we all have choices, but making bad choices can get you into serious trouble. Foody Field Trips As part of our term’s topic on food, Years 1, 2 and 3 have been on two visits recently. They went to Trewarren Farm to see where the potatoes grow. They picked lots of potatoes then enjoyed cooking and eating the potatoes in lots of different ways: jackets, chips, boiled and mashed. At Lower Hoaten Farm they saw calves, which licked everyone’s fingers! They learnt about the food that they eat and went in to see the milking parlour. They even saw the oldest bull on the farm – but didn’t get too close! Many thanks to Mrs Llewellin and Mr and Mrs Owen who were very good hosts!
