Philosophy for Kids III Bravery and Fear

Is it possible to be brave and afraid at the same time?

Bravery Valiant Courage Care Strength of mind Strength of character Stubborn? Unaware of consequences Bold Determined Fear Thoughtful Worried Scared Panic Overwhelmed Terrified Petrified Frozen Anxiety

So, can you be brave and afraid at the same time? Yes, when you are brave you are doing something that you are already scared of. If you were never scared of tarantulas and touched one, that is not an act of bravery. What are we really scared of when we feel scared? When you are scared what you are really scared of is the unknown. Is the basis of fear inside your head or the thing itself? ‘Mostly inside your head. Your imagination can be your worst enemy.’ How do you beat your fears? ‘ You have to face it down and go and put yourself in the situation – like sitting in the dark if you’re afraid of the dark.’

Can an animal be brave? Do they make a conscious decision to act? They can be brave but not like we are. It depends on whether an animal can have an awareness of future consequences. We call their actions brave but it could just be loyalty or good training that makes them do things like going into war or burning buildings.
