Everyday Discipleshi p

Jesus' teachings on discipleship in Matthew 10:24-42 are essential truths to our faith. We know this because our Lord repeated them many times throughout His ministry (cp. Matt. 16:24-25; Luke 14:26-35; John 8:31; 12:26; 15:1-16:4).

There are many “Christian s” but there are few disciples.

Everyday Discipleship The devil doesn’t mind us being “Christians,” because if anything can mean “Christian” or if anyone can be a “Christian,” without cost, it means nothing at all. But what he does not want and fights desperately against is our being disciples. It is everyday disciples that Jesus calls us to be. So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (Jn. 8:31, 32).

Discipleship is not about church meetings, attendance, affiliation or Bible study. Discipleship is much more personal. It is the public demonstration and the private practice of faith. A life that has been given to Jesus as Lord.

Everyday Discipleship “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me!” Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!” (John 21:18-22).

Discipleship is About… JesusMe &

Everyday Discipleship Discipleship is a duplication 1. The Gk. is mathetes “a learner or a pupil.” 2. The bottom line of discipleship is not just knowledge but likeness a) Lk. 6:40; 1Jn. 2:5-6; Jn. 13:14-17 b) Acts 4:13 (Jn.7:15) c) Phil. 3:10-11; Gal. 2:20 3. The more we are like Him the more we will be treated like Him. (Think about it! Cp. Jn. 15:18-20)

Everyday Discipleship The Bible has a great deal to say on the topic of discipleship and its importance. One of the most telling passages on the importance of discipleship is the great commission passage. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt. 28:19).

Everyday Discipleship “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt. 28:19).

Everyday Discipleship “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt. 28:19).

Everyday Discipleship “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt. 28:19).

Deeper Discipleship The word “go” is a present participle meaning (going or as you go). The only command in the entire great commission is to “make disciples.” In order to make disciples we must teach them what it means to be a disciple. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt. 28:19).

Everyday Discipleship "Many churches today remind me of a laboring crew trying to gather in a harvest while they sit in the tool shed. They go to the tool shed every Sunday and they study bigger and better methods of agriculture, sharpen their hoes, grease their tractors, and then get up and go home. Then they come back that night, study bigger and better methods of agriculture, sharpen their hoes, grease their tractors, and go home again. They comeback Wednesday night, and again study bigger and better methods of agriculture, sharpen their hoes, grease their tractors, and get up and go home. They do this week in and week out, year in and year out, and nobody ever goes out into the fields to gather in the harvest.” - Paul W. Powell, The Complete Disciple

Everyday Discipleship Discipleship is a decision 1. The decision to learn and live for the Lord is everyday. Not just when it is convenient. It is a summons to service and sacrifice. a) Lk. 9: There is huge difference between demanding and commanding. Jesus does not demand our decision to follow. However, the Lord’s person, position, and power is the basis of our decision, it commands our decision to follow. a) Jn. 6:66-68

Everyday Discipleship Discipleship is a determination 1. We sing a songs that say, “The Way of The Cross Leads Home,” “Where He leads I’ll follow” and “Have Thine Own Way Lord.” a) Lk. 9: The obstacles and challenges to faithful discipleship are many. a) Lk. 14:25-35 (Mk. 10:17-22) 3. Foes within and without a) Mt. 10:24-25; 34-36

Everyday Discipleship Discipleship is a devotion 1. Biblical discipleship is not a loose affiliation, or a quasi association. There must be a commitment of the highest order, there can be no rival. There is no place for a fair-weathered or fly-by night following. There must be a King and kingdom first commitment. a) Mt. 10:37-39 b) Jn. 21:15-17

Everyday Discipleship Discipleship is a devotion Florence Nightingale, at 30 years of age wrote this in her diary: “I am thirty years of age, the age at which Christ began His mission. Now, no more childish things, no more vain things.” Years later, near the end of her illustrious and heroic life, she was asked for the secret of her life. And this is what she said: “I can only give one explanation, that is this ‑ I have kept nothing back from God.”

Everyday Discipleship Discipleship is a delight I. Everyday discipleship brings with it fulfillment and real purpose. a) Jn. 15:8-12 b) Rom. 15:13 2. What is at the end of this costly discipleship? b) Mk. 10:28-30

Everyday Discipleship At the close of life, the question will not be, “How much have you gotten?” but “How much have you given?” Not “How much have you won?” but “How much have you done?” Not “How much have you saved?” but “How much have you sacrificed? ”It will be “How much have you loved and served,” not “How much were you honored?”
