Common Core Standards Continued Grade One July 2011

Uh oh! The “powers that be” in CMS ed “downtown” and said, “We are only focusing on one Standard for Practice next year. Which one would best represent the essence of the Common Core?” In your small group, respond to this and explain!

Yesterday

Crayon Activity Jennifer has 4 red crayons and Jamie has 6 blue crayons. How many crayons do they have together?

Crayon Puzzles ( Grade K and 1 ) Jamie has 10 crayons in his box. Some are red and some are blue. What combinations of crayons can he have? What math concepts are students working with here? Looking at the Common Core, which Practices and Content Standards does this activity address?

Crayon Puzzles- A Variation Jamie has 10 crayons in his box. Some are red and some are blue. He has more red crayons than blue crayons. What combinations of crayons can he have? What would modeling look like in this task? What other Standards for Practice are addressed in this task?

Bicycles, Tricycles, Cars (values of 2, 3, and 4) There are bicycles, tricycles and cars in the parking lot. If Dad counted a total of 24 wheels, how many of each vehicle could there be? How do these combination problems in address the Common Core Standards for Practice?

Realistic Expectations of a New First Grader Talk in your groups about what previous knowledge a new first grader should bring from Kindergarten. What would your ideal first day, first grader look like?

Realistic Expectations of a New First Grader Look at the Content Standards for Kindergarten. Were your expectations aligned with the Common Core expectations? Anything surprising to you?

Unpacking Content Standards

What’s New, Exciting and Different? Read the content standards for first grade. Notice any changes or additions to the standards?

Content Specific Identify the key points for the Content Standard in first grade. What Kindergarten content standards have prepared them for this first grade standard? How does this content standard evolve from K to 1 st grade?

Gallery Walk and Group Share

Recess! Select a game from Unit 1 and play with a partner. As you are playing, think about and discuss how this game supports the Common Core Standards for Practice and Content Standards? Record your thoughts on post-it notes and place them on the game poster.

Deep Dive

How does Investigations align with the Common Core? Using the graphic organizer respond to the following: 1.What Common Core Standards for Practice and Content Standards are addressed in Unit 1? 2.Are there ways we can enhance Unit 1 to include more Common Core Standards for Practice and Content Standards? 3. How do Classroom Routines address the Common Core Standards for Practice and Content Standards? 4. What vocabulary is important for the students to be using in classroom discussions?

Vocabulary What does vocabulary work look like in your classroom? How do students use vocabulary? How is new vocabulary introduced into your classroom?

Common Core and Vocabulary Read Page 1. List your 3 most important parts of this summary. What will this look like in your classroom? How will vocabulary be integrated into daily instruction?

Cognitively Guided Instruction What is C.G.I? Planning instruction based on how students learn best. Learning in context rather than in isolation. Look back at the Practice Standards and discuss how C.G.I. supports the Practice Standards.

7 + 5 = 12 Write a story problem for this equation.

7 + 5 = 12 Looking at the Table, which type of story problem did you create? Which ones were neglected? What does that tell us? What understandings are not being addressed?

7 + 5 = 12 Now write a story problem for the situation you were given. Share with your group. How did this activity support the objectives of the Common Core?

“Creating Great Inquiry” Roll the category cube Roll two number cubes Create an example of each story type based on the outcome of your rolls

Problem Solving Types Result Unknown Change Unknown Start Unknown Students need to start with the result unknown, and sprinkle in start unknown and change unknown Students exposed to all types of these problems with “effective teachers” in both 1 st and 2 nd grade SUBSTANTIALLY outperformed their peers in: –Problem Solving –Computation (3-5 seconds for facts) –Beliefs towards mathematics

Classroom Climate How can I set-up my classroom to be Common Core ready?

Classroom Climate How can I set up my classroom to get students to communicate?

So What’s Next? You will meet with your school team to make a plan of action for implementing Practice Standards and Content Standards at your school.
