Metadata Tool Proposals PNAMP Meeting Wednesday, December 15 th 2010

Agenda 1:30-2:00 Meeting objectives and process 2:00-3:00 Review of business needs 3:00-4:00 Proposed software solutions 4:00-5:00 Evaluation and discussion of proposed software solutions 5:00 Adjourn

Objectives Advance regional implementation of metadata creation Evaluate approaches for improving implementation Evaluate potential software tools to support metadata creation

Process Propose and review tool options (today) Prioritize tool options (today) Meeting notes/conclusions (Dec 24, EDS) Follow up on priority tools (Jan 14, EDS) Requirements description (Jan 14, EDS) Task Group Review/Meeting (Jan 24-28)

Evaluation Criteria Support creation of metadata Does not duplicate existing tools Reuse of existing information Supports implementation of Executive Order Support business needs of regional monitoring programs Meets needs of individual agencies Increases availability of regional metadata ?

Centralized versus Distributed Metadata is core business knowledge PNAMP Inventories of who, when, where, why, and how Organizations need to understand their activities in relation to other regional organizations Dynamic compiling of metadata Provide support to data exchange network

FGDC / Regional Business Needs Implementation of Executive Order –Federal Agencies must supply FGDC metadata –FGDC ElementsFGDC Elements Business needs of regional monitoring programs –Does FGDC capture the right information? –Biological Data Profile vrs MonitoringMethods.org Taxonomic, Study design, Methods, QA, Field Equipment –Spatial location information

Evaluation Criteria Support creation of metadata Does not duplicate existing tools Reuse of existing information Supports implementation of Executive Order Support business needs of regional monitoring programs Meets needs of individual agencies Increases availability of regional metadata ?

Tool Proposals 1.Web-enabled GIS Site Location Tool 2.Site History Manager 3.PNW Metadata Clearinghouse (NBII) 4.Regional Metadata Builder 5.Expand scope of MonitoringMethod.org 6.Database Documentation Tool

Web-enabled GIS Site Location Tool Would publish regionally unique identifiers for sites Regional data systems could link to unique site identifiers Include significant web based GIS capability –Define location and boundary of site –Snap site to stream networks (NHD, 1:24k WsDNR, 1:12k Oregon…) Site could be identified as point, line, or polygon –Points might represent monitoring location, barrier removals, etc –Lines might represent restored or treated stream, monitored stream section, etc –Polygons might represent area restored, area treated, area of influence, area of inference, fish population boundaries, etc. Site Characteristics tracked –Stream characteristic – Strhaler, gradient, discharge, elevation –Upstream characteristics – landuse, –Riparian characteristics – vegetation type

Site History Manager Potentially built-on Site Location Tool Track Monitoring Activity –Monitoring activity type –Link to MonitoringMethod.org –Link to monitoring project identifier/contract –Date/Time of visits Site evaluation (GRTS-style) and requirements for landowner contact

PNW Metadata Clearinghouse (NBII) Built as a portal within existing clearinghouse (NBII, Mercury or Mermaid) Relatively low investment cost Only valuable if metadata actually exists Should be supported with metadata steward staff

Regional Metadata Builder Script to compile existing data into FGDC XML format From technical perspective, should be relatively straight forward Challenge lies in mapping existing systems to FGDC Distributed approach to metadata creation and management Assumes output would be imported to existing metadata creation tools Assumes metadata stewards to work with biologists to fill in remaining information Raises the question of where does the final, completed metadata document get archived and distributed. Raises the question of whether FGDC is sufficiently detailed to meet information requirements under the BiOP or other regional business needs

Expand scope of MonitoringMethod.org Build as regionally centralized repository Include full breathe of FGDC elements Raises the question of whether FGDC is sufficiently detailed to meet information requirements under the BiOP or other regional business needs

Database Documentation Tool Create FGDC entity and attribute metadata by reading schema of agency databases Only benefits those who have existing databases

Tool Proposals 1.Web-enabled GIS Site Location Tool 2.Site History Manager 3.PNW Metadata Clearinghouse (NBII) 4.Regional Metadata Builder 5.Expand scope of MonitoringMethod.org 6.Database Documentation Tool 7.Other proposals??
