In a term that is the product of a number and a variable, the number is called the coefficient. -2x + 3x 2 -2 is the coefficient of x 3 is the coefficient of x 2

LIKE TERMS are terms in an expression that have the same variable raised to the same power. For example 8x and 3x are like terms. Real Numbers are considered like terms.

But the terms x² and x are NOT like terms. They have the same variable, but it is not to the same power.

Identify the like terms in the expression: -x² + 5x – 4 – 3x + 2 The terms 5x and -3x are like terms. The terms -4 and 2 are also like terms.

Identify the like terms in the expression x² - x x – x² + 2x + x² x

SIMPLIFIED EXPRESSIONS The distributive property allows you to combine like terms by adding their coefficients. An expression is simplified if it has no grouping symbols and if all the like terms have been combined.

Simplify the expression 8x + 3 x Add the coefficients 8x + 3x =11x

Simplify the expression 2y² + 7y² - y² + 2 Add the coefficients 2y² + 7y² - 1y² + 2 =8y² + 2
