Water baptism is a subject about which there is no small amount of confusion and conflicting views. It is also a subject that is characterized by extremes. Some saying it is of no real importance; others saying that it within itself saves. Scriptural Baptism

What we shall cover: Is water baptism biblical? The action of baptism. Who was baptized. Who did the baptizing. What preceded baptism (followed). Why they were baptized. When they were baptized. What baptism does not do. Why some baptize today. Objections to baptism considered. Jesus’ baptism. Scriptural Baptism

Is water baptism biblical? The noun baptisma is found 22 times in the Greek New Testament and the verb baptizo is found about 80 times. Baptism was part of Jesus’ Great Commission (Matt. 28: 18, 19, Mark 16: 15, 16). Scriptural Baptism

The action of baptism. “Baptisma, baptism, consisting of the processes of immersion, submersion and emergence” (W. E. Vine). Romans 6: 4; Colossians 2: 12. Scriptural Baptism

Who was baptized. “…both men and women” (Acts 5: 14). Scriptural Baptism

Who did the baptizing. Apollos and Philip baptized (I Cor. 1: 12; Acts 8: 5, 12). Scriptural Baptism

What preceded baptism Preaching Believed Repented Confessed Baptized Pentecost Believed, 2: 36 Repented, 2: 38 Baptized, 2: 38 Samaria Believed, 8: 12 Baptized, 8: 12 Eunuch Believed, 8: 37 Confessed, 8: 37 Baptized, 8: 38 Saul Baptized, 22: 16 Cornelius Believed, 10: 43 Baptized, 10: 48 Jailer Believed, 16: 31 Repented, 16: 33 Baptized, 16: 33 Lydia Believed, 16: 14 Baptized, 16:15 Preaching Faith Repentance Confession Baptism Rom. 1: 16 Rom. 10: 17 Acts 17: 31 Rom. 10: 9, 10 Gal. 3: 27 Scriptural Baptism

Why they were baptized. To put on Christ – Gal. 3: 27. To be born again – John 3. To obey – Acts 2: 38, Heb. 5: 9. To contact Jesus’ death – Rom. 6. To get into Christ – Gal. 3: 27. To be saved – I Pet. 3: 21. Scriptural Baptism

When they were baptized. They were baptized as soon as they heard the word and were convicted – Acts 2: 41; 8: 12; 36-39; 22: 16; 16: 33. Scriptural Baptism

What baptism does not do. Does not forgive all future sin. Does not remove temptation. Does not free from trials. Does not place in human church. Scriptural Baptism

Why some baptize today. Two common reasons: “Outward sign of inward grace” and “to place in church.” Scriptural Baptism

Objections to baptism considered. 1.“Baptism is a work.” 2.“Saved by Jesus.” 3.“Paul not sent to baptize.” Scriptural Baptism

Jesus’ baptism. 13: “Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14: But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15: And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3). Scriptural Baptism

36: “And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37: And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38: And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39: And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing” (Acts 8).
