Introduction The Parable of the Prodigal Son: – Many Christians are familiar with the “prodigal son” and his life in the parable. – All know the lesson on “forgiveness”. – Few ever think about the primary reason for the parable: to teach the Scribes and Pharisees the need to rejoice over the lost who are found!

Now, The Rest of the Story

The Older Son Had likely been working in the field. V. 25 – Heard music and dancing. – Asked the reason for the festivity: ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ v. 27

Reaction From the Older Son He was angry. – Years of service vs. years of selfish/prodigal living. – Never disobedient – No party for this faithful son. – There was no “counting of his blessings” He refused to go in (and rejoice over his brother’s return)

The Father’s Reply

Learning about the older brother’s reaction: – He came out and entreated His son. – Listened to His son’s complaints. – Offers the reason of love and compassion: ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”(Vss ESV)

Conclusion Brethren, we need to be like the older brother in that we should serve our father faithfully in the field. When it comes to “sinners and tax collectors” who return after being lost, we need to be like our Father and rejoice… it is fitting!
