THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY

Luke 15:11-12 NIV 11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.

1. THE YOUNGER SON represents THE BAD. He is off to a bad start showing lack of respect. He was a party boy. Luke 15:13-14. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living.

“Wasted his substance.” “Riotous living.” Was it worse to lose his money or his self- respect? Sin is expensive. He ended in poverty. A Jew – feeding pigs! Sin promises freedom but brings slavery. It promises success but brings failure. Promises life but brings death.

2. THE OLDER BROTHER represents THE UGLY. Luke 15:25-32 NIV 25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'

28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'

31 "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'"

These 2 boys have something in common. They did not love the father, but loved the things he could give. The younger brother was bad on the outside. The older brother was good on the outside but ugly on the inside. “I’ve worked hard all these years.” “I never disobeyed you.”

The older brother’s sins…..  Pride. He refuses to acknowledge his brother. He refuses to join the celebration. James 4:6 God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

 Anger He thinks he deserves better. Luke 15:28-30 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. “

 Unforgiveness and bitterness. He is so bitter that even his father’s pleading could not get him to come in to the party.  A cold heart. Look how he sums up his relationship with his father. Luke 15:29 All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders.

3.THE GOOD represents our HEAVENLY FATHER.  The father’s behaviour. “He saw him.” He never stopped looking. “He ran to him.” He doesn’t care why he’s home, just so long as he’s home.

“He embraces him and kisses him.” Unconditional love.  He doesn’t let the son grovel before him. Luke 15:17-20 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.” The father’s response. Luke 15:22-24 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.

24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate. God’s forgiveness…. You can’t buy it or work for it. GOD IS GOOD ….ALL THE TIME!

 The father throws a party. Luke 15:31-32 "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'"

 The father is good. The older brother would not go in, so the father goes out to him. Only one son enjoys a relationship with the father. Luke 15:31 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.

31 "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'"
