14.2 Chapter Overview The seventh commandment involves the topics of stealing, the use of private property, and the necessity of making amends. The tenth commandment helps us appreciate the need to follow the way of Jesus in order to avoid the sins of envy, avarice, and greed. Justice applies the seventh commandment to the pursuit of the common good. Catholic social teaching offers guidance for achieving social justice.

V14.1 Vocabulary Commutative justice (p. 265): The obligation, required by the seventh commandment, to respect the rights of others. Reparation (p. 265): Making amends for harming another; returning stolen property. Envy (p. 266): “Sadness at the sight of another’s goods and the immoderate desire to have them for oneself.” (Catechism, #2553)

V14.2 Vocabulary Avarice (p. 266): “A passion for riches and their attendant power.” (Catechism, #2552) Greed (p. 266): The desire to amass limitless earthly goods. Common good (p. 271): A long-standing concept advocating that society should be organized so that, as much as possible, both individuals and the entire community are equally thriving.

V14.3 Vocabulary On the Condition of Workers (p. 273): The 1891 encyclical of Pope Leo XIII voicing concern for industrial workers; the first of a series of documents comprising modern Catholic social teaching. Spiral of poverty (p. 276): Poor people being in a situation that makes overcoming poverty almost impossible. Urbanization (p. 276): Growth of cities worldwide.
