Do you find exegetical outlining difficult? “Everything we now do with ease, at one time we did with difficulty”

Let's go through steps 1-3 with Ephesians 6:4

μὴ παροργίζετε τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν ἀλλὰ ἐκτρέφετε αὐτὰ ἐν παιδείᾳ καὶ Ephesians 6:4 "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" (NAU).

1. Study Ephesians 6:4 Context: What did Paul record just before this text? • Children should obey their parents (6:1-3). • Believers should submit to one another (5:21–6:9). Purpose: Why is this passage in the Bible? • Parents need to know how to raise their kids. • Fathers tend to be harsh with their children. Background: What historical context helps us understand this passage? • First century Greek society favored boys.

1. Study Ephesians 6:4 Questions To whom did Paul write this? Why does this verse address fathers? Aren't mothers also raising children? How are we to treat children? What does it mean to exasperate children? What kind of training is meant here? How is training different than instruction? What is meant by "instruction of the Lord"? How long should fathers do this? Does the Greek word for “fathers" here help us understand how long obedience lasts?

2. Structure (Exegetical Outline) I. Negative: The way Ephesian fathers should raise their children was by not provoking them (4a). II. Positive: The way Ephesian fathers should raise their children was by guiding them in God's ways (4b-c). Ephesian fathers should train their children (4b). Ephesian fathers should instruct their children in God's ways (4c).

3. CPT (Exegetical Idea) EI: The way Ephesian fathers should raise their children was by guiding rather than provoking them. Negative: The way Ephesian fathers should raise their children was by not provoking them (4a). II. Positive: The way Ephesian fathers should raise their children was by guiding them in God's ways (4b-c). 10.9 & 11.22

Form the Exegetical Idea (CPT) Step 3 31 Form the Exegetical Idea (CPT) After designing the Main Points (MPs) of your Exegetical Outline (EO), add them up into a Central Proposition of the Text (CPT) or Exegetical Idea (EI)

How to Get an EI 32 Psalm 23 (p. 46) Neh. 1-2 (p. 116) EI: The response EI: The means I. The response I. The means II. The manner II. The means III. The response III. The means John 13 (p. 152) EI: The reason I. The reason II. The reason III. The reason

A Proposition… Explain it Prove it Apply it 38 A Proposition… There are only three things that can be done with any given idea or statement, whether it be the main idea of the message or one of the points within the outline: Explain it Prove it Apply it

"It's going to be freezing today." 38 "It's going to be freezing today." I. Explain it. Answer the question, "What do I need to explain?" "Oh, it's going to be 30 degrees --Fahrenheit!" A. Some passages explain themselves, so give that explanation (e.g., Mark 4). B. If the text doesn't explain itself, then you must. Perhaps the author assumed people would understand (e.g., "born of water" in John 3:5). If your audience needs explanation, explain it. C. Inductive introductions/questions need answers.

"It's going to be freezing today." 38 "It's going to be freezing today." I. Explain it. Answer the question, "What do I need to explain?" "Oh, it's going to be 30 degrees --Fahrenheit!" II. Prove it. Answer the question, "Do my listeners believe it?" "BBC said it--about Siberia!" A. Don't prove what your audience already accepts. B. Prove it if the biblical & modern audiences need it. C. Prove it even if the biblical audience didn't need it but the modern audience does need proof.

II. Prove it (continued…) 38 D. When proof is needed, 1 of 3 problems exist: 1. He doesn't see the connection. a. "Be nice to grandpa for babies." b. Col. 1–Knowing God's will gives patience. 2. He doesn't believe the connection. a. Eph. 6:1-3–Long life from honoring parents b. 1 Cor. 7:10–No remarriage after divorce 3. Something else is more important to him. a. "Acceptance is more important than purity." b. "Keeping my job is better than honesty."

"It's going to be freezing today." 39 "It's going to be freezing today." I. Explain it. Answer the question, "What do I need to explain?" "Oh, it's going to be 30 degrees --Fahrenheit!" II. Prove it. Answer the question, "Do my listeners believe it?" "BBC said it--about Siberia!" III. Apply it. Answer the question, "So what? Where does it show up in real life?" "Bring your heavy coat if traveling to Siberia!"

III. Apply it (continued…) 39 A. A biblical author may apply his idea or statement. B. If he doesn't apply it, then you must do so. C. Our preaching goal is not knowledge but behavior. 1. Knowledge alone makes us proud (1 Cor. 8:1a). 2. Knowledge plus love helps us all (1 Cor. 8:1b). D. Proper application has two parts: 1. What is the valid principle? (hermeneutics) 2. What is the concrete application and extended application? (specifics) "Fathers, don't provoke your kids to anger" "Mothers, help your husbands not to provoke your kids to anger"

Two Parts to Application 39 = Principle + Specifics Principle (Abstraction) "Give the poor jobs" Flesh & Blood Flesh & Blood Real Life Examples Real Life Parishioners "Don't cut crop corners" "Pay the beggar for housework" Biblical Situation Specifics (Concrete) 21st Century Situation
