In Text Citations: MLA

What is an in text citation? First: what do we mean by “in text” Next: what is a citation? In text citations are also known as parenthetical citations. What does parenthetical mean? Why do we have to cite? Where should you go for help with in text citations?

Why should you use in text citations? What is an expert? How are they important in the paper that you write?

When should you use in text citations? Why is it important to give credit to outside sources that you have What are the consequences of not giving credit where credit is due? Would you be fine with someone using your intellectual property without giving you credit? You must use an in text citation when you directly quote or summarize ideas that come from an outside source.

How to create in text citations? In text citations are fairly simple because there are only a few formats to follow. The information that is in the parentheses depends on what is used in the preceding sentence. You use an in text citation in conjunction with quoted or summarized material.

Author-Page Style One purpose of in text citations is that someone reading your paper can use your sources if they want more information about your topic. By including information in your in text citation that corresponds with your Works Cited page readers can quickly find that information Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). Who is Wordsworth? What is 263?

Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263). Why is Wordsworth not included in the parentheses? Why is “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” in quotation marks? Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263). How does this citation differ from the one above?

Unknown author What do you think you would do in cases where you do not have an author? We see so many global warming hotspots in North America likely because this region has "more readily accessible climatic data and more comprehensive programs to monitor and study environmental change . . ." ("Impact of Global Warming" 6). What do the 3 dots at the end of the quote indicate?

Works Cited Wordsworth, William. Lyrical Ballads. London: Oxford U.P., 1967. Print. "The Impact of Global Warming in North America." GLOBAL WARMING: Early Signs. 1999. Web. 23 Mar. 2009.

Your Task For the remainder of the period you should In a Word document create 4 examples of in text citations You must have summarized material and a direct quote You must have a known author and unknown author You must include the author (or title) in parentheses and in the sentence
