Electric Storage Heaters: Dead or Alive? Introduced in the 70s and 80s to use surplus night-time nuclear generation not as a way of optimising the quality of heat for tenants How can you take existing electric storage heaters and turn them into an advanced 21st century heating system at no cost to the tenant or the landlord?.....and deliver better heat at a better price, and as part of a plan to “keep the lights on”!

The Electric Storage Heating market In GB 26m households incl 2.2m with electric heating (8.1%) In Scotland 2.4m incl 318k with electric heating (13.4%) 4m in GB are in social housing – many are managed as ‘heat with rent’ where the landlord pays for the heat energy Social housing loads are concentrated in cities, often in tower blocks, with a high % electric heating in cities e.g. Dundee 22%, Glasgow 17% Other applications include sheltered housing and student accommodation Probably the most deferrable load in GB electricity usage?

Making it better for the tenant? What if..... we charged their heaters during the day and made their houses warmer at night? gave the supplier the ability to source energy when it’s cheap? gave the distribution network owner the ability to control loads in their area? gave the transmission operator the ability to switch on/off aggregated loads to help them balance the network? installed temperature monitoring at each storage heater to ensure that each room has sufficient heat?
