We will begin our first unit today, you will be taking notes. Please get your own paper, the “Color Wheel” sheet, colored pencils and a pen. Unit 1: Color & Design

Unit One: Color & Design Part 1: Color

Primary Colors Yellow Red Blue

Secondary Colors Made by combing two primary colors. Orange Green Violet

Tertiary Colors Made by mixing a primary and a secondary color. Yellow-green, blue-green, blue- violet, red-violet, red-orange and yellow-orange

Complimentary Colors Colors opposite each other on the color wheel. Assumed to be as different from one another as possible.

Color Properties Hue name of the color. Tints are light values that are made by mixing a color with white. Shades are dark values that are made by mixing a color with black.

Unit 1 Continued… Part 2: Color Schemes (using more than one color)

Variations of the same hue (color). (A painting all in blues such as Navy Blue, Sky Blue, Ocean Blue etc.) Monochromatic Color Scheme

Complimentary Color Scheme Colors opposite one another on the color wheel.

Colors next to one another on the color wheel. Typically three- five colors. Analogous Color Scheme

Colors equidistant on the color wheel. Triad Color Scheme

Cool Color Scheme Are blue, aqua, and violet—water and air elements.

Warm Color Scheme Yellow, orange, red, and brown—earth and fire elements.

Monochromatic Complimentary

Colors can play tricks on our eyes Place two complementary colors next to each other and both of them will seem more brilliant.

Color can influence our perception of size. Red, orange, and yellow increase size and space. (warm Colors) Blues and greens decrease size and space. (cool colors)
