Breaking Bread at the Passover Meal Luke 22:7-38 Message 7 in our 9-part series called Table Talk with Jesus. Sunday, August 18, 2013 Speaker: Gord Hambly

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Luke 22:14 NIV

22 When they came together in Galilee, he [Jesus] said to them, “The Son of Man [the name Jesus often called Himself] is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief. Matthew 17:22, 23 NIV

13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. 14 “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance. Exodus 12:13-14 NIV

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:17-19 NIV

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Luke 22:20 NIV

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. 1 Peter 3:18 NIV but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 ESV

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 NIV

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest [Jesus] had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. Hebrews 10:11-14 NIV

The Gospel [Good News] We’re all sinners, deserving of spiritual death. Christ died to pay the penalty of our sins. Through faith in Jesus and His blood sacrifice for our sins, God declares us “righteous”.

Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires. Romans 13:14 NLT

You can cultivate a spirit of complaining or a spirit of thanksgiving: the choice is up to you.

William Bradford

I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.

27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. …32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me. 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands. 2 Corinthians 11:23-32 NIV

10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. Philippians 4:10-11 NIV I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Romans 8:18 NIV

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25 NIV

6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-7 NIV

Alan Weaver

I really noticed his consistent practical spiritual walk such as seeing him in the living room early in the day reading his Bible, spending most Saturdays fixing something at the church or helping with repairs at a widow/divorcee home, picking up people on the way to church, preparing a short spiritual message for the church bulletin (which my Mom collated into a short book) and inviting people home after church for Sunday dinner.

Throw in the eldership of the church, involvement with the Gideons and Christian Businessman's Assoc - there were no idle moments. He was also quite successful at his management position in a consulting arm of the CNR railway. My Dad always talked about "redeeming" the time!... well to me anyway!

All during that time he had continuing problems with his health. He had 1/2 his tongue removed (oral cancer issues) and not once did I hear him complain. Dialog around the kitchen table was always insightful - often connecting the spiritual and the eternal to everyday life.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34 NIV

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. Psalm 9:1 NIV But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 NIV

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 NIV Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 NIV

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe… Hebrews 12:28 NIV
