Since God is fair and just, it is natural that the first trumpet warnings would be mixed with mercy and the last judgment plagues would be sent in full strength, not be mixed with mercy, and equal in number to the first. These seven first plagues are the trumpets of Revelation. Since the trumpets of Revelation occur before the close of mercy, or probation (we will discuss this in detail shortly), then these trumpets are judgments that are mixed with mercy. Gods sends these Trumpet plagues in love to wake up those who have not had opportunity to learn the truth. 1st_Trumpet_Rev-D.ppt© ; David Douglas Bell, All rights reserved Page 4 The Close of Probation in Revelation 15 One of the most detailed discussions of the close of probation in the entire book of Revelation is found in chapter 15. John begins the chapter by showing us the seven angels with the seven last plagues (see verse 1), but a quick check will show you that these angels do not begin to pour out the plagues until chapter 16:1. They are not allowed to pour out the plagues until all of the events of chapter 15 have happened--events that are associated with the close of probation. The close of probation is particularly evident in verses 5 and 8, which we will now examine.

In Revelation 15:5 John gives us a glimpse into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary: “And after that I looked, and behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened ”-[Emphasis added].

1st_Trumpet_Rev-D.ppt© ; David Douglas Bell, All rights reserved Page 6 The key statement here is, “the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened.” A similar verse in Revelation 11:19 says, “And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.” I believe these verses describe the same scene. Notice that in both cases the door to the heavenly sanctuary is opened. Chapter 11:19 goes one step further and shows us the ark of the covenant, making it very clear that it is the door into the most holy place itself that we see thrown open. The closest analogy to this anywhere else in the Bible is the rending of the veil in the earthly sanctuary at the time Christ died exposing the Most Holy Place to view (see Luke 23:45 & 46). By this God indicated that the services in the earthly sanctuary had come to an end. The Jews continued to offer their sacrifices for another forty years, till the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, but as far as God was concerned these sacrifices held no more meaning after Christ's death. 1st_Trumpet_Rev-D.ppt© ; David Douglas Bell, All rights reserved Page 7 If the throwing open of the temple of God in heaven corresponds to the rending of the veil in the earthly sanctuary, which I believe it does, then Revelation 15:5 is telling us that the services in the heavenly sanctuary have come to an end. And that is the close of probation. Verse 8 : Another obvious description of the close of probation in Revelation 15 is found in verse 8: “And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.”-[Emphasis added]. This point becomes utterly clear when we compare Revelation 15:8 with a scene in the Old Testament that occurred at the time Solomon dedicated his temple: “Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord‘s house.” 2 Chronicles 7:1 and 2 (KJV) The Close of Probation in Revelation 15 (Cont.)

1st_Trumpet_Rev-D.ppt© ; David Douglas Bell, All rights reserved Page 11 The fourth point in the dedication of Solomon's temple is not mentioned in Revelation, but the comparison with the other three is so close that it seems certain that the dedication of Solomon's temple is the model on which John based his description of the temple in Revelation 15:8. That being the case, we can apply to Revelation 15:8 the fact that the priests could not officiate while the temple was filled with a cloud and the glory of God, and we can say that Christ will not be able to officiate as our Mediator in the heavenly sanctuary while smoke and the glory of God fill the heavenly sanctuary. Obviously, if our High Priest cannot officiate during this time, probation will have closed. The Close of Probation in Revelation 15 (Cont.)

We have seen that Revelation 15:5-8 is the close of probation, and verse 5 shows us the open door into the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary. John also shows us the open door into the most holy place in Revelation 11:19. If the open door into the heavenly sanctuary in Revelation 15:5 is the same event as the open door in chapter 11:19, which I believe it is, then we can say that the close of probation will come at the end of the seven trumpets and at the beginning of the seven plagues.
