Complex Issues Dynamic area with huge growth in water requirements and need to sustain water for social and economic activities Complex infrastructure system Efficient use of scarce resource important All users contribute to the effluent and complex water quality issues We need to ensure there will be enough water for this important area 5

Background to the Integrated Vaal River studies Various studies were done over many years It culminated in the Vaal River Reconciliation Strategy Study Stakeholders participation in Steering Committee is continuing Strategy is presented at various stakeholder workshops 6

Future Options to Reconcile Focus of Vaal Reconciliation Strategy Study: Options for augmentation limited Need to balance supply and demand Develop strategies (scenario based) to meet growing water requirements Find best reconciliation solution i.t.o. – Least cost (to end user) – Long term vision – Maximize future flexibility Involvement of stakeholders 7

Vaal River Reconciliation Strategy Ensuring that sufficient water is available to supply the future requirements of the Vaal River System requires five pillar strategy: Eradicate unlawful water use by the year 2014 Reduction in water use by 15% through WC/WDM by 2015 Re-use of treated effluent – Starting with AMD and ready by 2015 Augmentation (LHWP Phase 2) by 2020 Continuation of Strategy Steering Committee 8

Reconciliation Scenario (2) High Water Requirement Scenario with Water Conservation and Demand Management First transfer from LHWP Phase II High with target WC/WDMDesalination of Mine WaterUnlawful removed System Yield Yield increases due to removal of dilution releases Polihali Dam Yield AMD reuse Desalinate AMD 13

Reconciliation Scenario (3) High Water Requirement Scenario with Water Conservation and Demand Management & Re-use First transfer from LHWP Phase II High with target WC/WDMDesalination of Mine WaterUnlawful removed Re-use 80% of surplus yield in the Crocodile West River System System Yield Polihali Dam Yield Desalinate AMD AMD reuse Yield increases due to removal of dilution releases 14

Vaal River Reconciliation Strategy Ensuring that sufficient water is available to supply the future requirements of the Vaal River System requires a now six pillar strategy: Eradicate unlawful water use by the year 2014 Continue with the reduction in water use by 15% through WC/WDM to achieve further targets by 2015 Re-use of treated effluent – Started with AMD and ready by mid 2018 – Starting with investigating re-use of treated waste water in Crocodile West System to reduce demand from Vaal Augmentation (LHWP Phase 2) by 2023 Continuation of Strategy Steering Committee 15
