RTRN is a cooperative research network that facilitates translational research in health disparity areas integrates clinical, biomedical and behavioral scientists into cyber workgroups enables researchers to collaborate more efficiently, enhance scientific productivity and translate their findings into improved health outcomes for their communities leverages the intellectual and technological resources of the 18 RCMI centers,

Mission and Vision RTRN Mission The primary goal of the RTRN is to foster and support inter- institutional collaborations to maximally leverage resources and expertise across each member RCMI institution, enhancing the research capacity and accelerating the understanding and treatment of diseases, with a focus on those that disproportionately affect underserved communities. RTRN Vision "To lead health science innovation that focuses on improving the health of underserved communities and be a valued resource of health related research for these communities."

Specific Aims Establish the network. To integrate researchers into clinical, biomedical and behavioral researchers with providers and community leaders into geographic and ethnically diverse research partnerships. Generate Translational Research. To create a system of research clusters which links collaborating members within cyber workspaces to promote intellectual exchange, generate innovative inter- and multi-disciplinary research and facilitate scientific advances. Conduct multi-site research. To develop multi-site studies and encourage multidisciplinary approaches to address diseases that disproportionately affect underserved communities. Implement a Data Technology Coordinating Center (DTCC). The center will provide clinical data management, remote data capture, biostatical services, project management, database development and administration to support clinical and biomedical research, and educational activities.

Translational Research Clusters The RTRN Translational Research Cluster (TRC) system is comprised of six research clusters focusing on:

The RTRN DTCC provides logistical, technological and collaborative support, including: collaborating in the development, implementation and monitoring of Network protocols providing data management including preparation of electronic case report forms (eCRFs) and manual of procedures (MOP) statistical support and regulatory guidance to ensure efficient and productive research initiatives DTCC

DTCC Core Technologies Secure portal that provides access to many of the systems and information needed through the lifecycle of a clinical study Information Security –Physical security –Electronic security of data (VPN (Virtual Private Network) / SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Firewall to provide secure access to data over the internet) Clinical Data Management System: –Electronic Remote Data Capture (RDC) –Thesaurus Management System (TMS) –Validated data transfer Clinical Data Analysis System: Server-based SAS which supports the following: –Random Allocation v.1.1, ConQuest –PASS, Latent Gold and Winstep Collaborative tools used to support synchronous and asynchronous interactions: –Audio and videoconferencing capabilities –Real-time shared presentations and desktops –Workspaces, document sharing, content management & shared file spaces HIPAA compliant

RTRN Primary First Year Goals Establish the DTCC. Establish staffing and physical site for the data and technology coordinating center as the hub of RTRN. Implement the pilot project. Establish the pilot project using a detailed approach required by the FDA for all elements to establish the highest standard template for future trials. Establish the Infrastructure and Standard Operating Procedures to Support Multi-Site Translational Research Activities. To work with the Duke Clinical Research Institute to establish SOP, standards and relevant templates that will support future trials.

Pilot Study The Effect of Vitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] on Vascular Function and Cardiovascular Risk Factors Research teams at Charles Drew University – led by RTRN Principal Investigator Dr. Keith Norris and Morehouse School of Medicine – led by Principal Investigator Dr. Gary Gibbons – in collaboration with the RTRN DTCC will conduct this study. The Pilot Study: –will examine the effects of Vitamin D on vascular function and selected cardiovascular risk factors. –will serve as a model for standardizing the network’s research processes and achieving good clinical practices and uniform standards. –is a randomized trial observing 130 African- American participants taking either Vitamin D3 or a placebo once a month for 90 days. Currently, several multi-institutional collaborations are in development to become studies supported by the network.

RTRN Secondary First Year Goals Establish RCMI Core Labs that desire to be elevated to RTRN Core level. Establish a distributed network of core resources that will support RCMI disparities work. –Establish policies for utility and pricing - standard charge back and collaboration Develop Research Cluster (thought groups) Implement a highly functional network of cyber workspaces to facilitate inter-institutional collaborations. Develop CTSA and IDeA Collaborations
