Why Barnsley? Barnsley ranked in bottom 10% of the government multiple deprivation index (2007) as one of the most deprived districts in England Borough; 9 towns and 23 villages Population 220,000 Influenced by: - employment deprivation - health deprivation - education

Employment deprivation Large numbers of people either unemployed or long term sick The working age population with limiting disability and illness is 8.6% higher than the national average Unemployment is 8% of the working age population compared to 6% national average

Health Deprivation Long term illness is an acute problem (DH 2008) Although improving, health is generally worse than the national average Early deaths from coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer are decreasing but still higher than the national average Obesity is higher than average; 28.5% of adults and 20% year 6 children Males from the most deprived areas have more than 5 years shorter life expectancy There are 470 deaths per year from smoking; although reducing, smoking is significantly higher than nationally 1/3 households live in ‘fuel poverty’ Upward trend in drug possession and trafficking but downward trend in other crime

Education Many have low level or no qualifications Few young people stay in education Working age population with no qualification is 4.8% above national average 23.9% of the population have a reading age of 11 years High proportion of children are in poverty Higher than national average of teenage pregnancy
