Do Now : How can Hamlet rationalize the death of Polonius? HW: Read Act 4, Scenes 1, 2, 3.

  Hamlet begins by berating his mother.  This scene has long been linked to Hamlet’s Oedipal Complex.  Hamlet hesitates to kill Claudius and then walks into Gertrude’s bedroom. Why does Hamlet immediately jump to murder the “Claudius” behind the curtain?  What is Hamlet’s reaction to killing Polonius? “Mother, you have my father much offended.”

  Does Gertrude betray Hamlet or is she looking out for a son that she truly thinks is mad? What do you think? A Mother’s Love?
