Geoprocessing; Useful Tools You Should Know in ArcToolbox Unlock the hidden secrets of ArcToolbox to discover tools that make your work easier and analysis more insightful.

Overview What is ArcToolbox? Helpful toolboxes Analysis Toolbox Data Management Toolbox Geocoding Toolbox Spatial Statistics Toolbox Questions

What is ArcToolbox? Provides you with tools for data conversion, table manipulation, managing coordinate systems, changing map projections, and more. In other words… Takes existing data (Input Feature Class)… Performs an operation (Geoprocessing) on the Input data by using a tool… and returns the result (Output Feature Class) of the Geoprocessing. GEOPROCESS OUTPUT FEATURE CLASS INPUT FEATURE CLASS CLASS CLASS

What is ArcToolbox? Cont.

Using the Index tab If you know the name of the tool you want, but just can't remember what toolbox or toolset it's in, use the Index tab. Using the Search tab The Search tab behaves a lot like the Index tab except that the search is not only by tool name, but also by its description and list of keywords.

What is ArcToolbox? Cont. Licensing Notes Depending on your ArcGIS license (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) some tools may not be available to you. You can have access to certain tools by purchasing licenses for Extension Spatial Analyst Geostatistical Analyst Schematics 3D Analyst

Exercise 1

Helpful toolboxes: Analysis Toolbox Clip Tool Use Clip when you want to cut out a piece of one feature class using one or more of the features in another feature class as a "cookie cutter". Line features clipped by polygon features Polygon features clipped by polygon features Point features clipped by polygon features

Helpful toolboxes: Analysis Toolbox cont. Select Tool Extracts features from an input feature class or input feature layer and stores them in a new output feature class.

Exercise 2-3

Helpful toolboxes: Analysis Toolbox cont. Buffer Tool Creates buffer polygons to a specified distance around the Input Features.

Helpful toolboxes: Analysis Toolbox cont. Intersect Tool New information is created when overlaying one set of features with another. There are six types of overlay operations; all involve joining two existing sets of features into a single set of features to identify spatial relationships between the input features.

Helpful toolboxes: Data Management Toolbox Dissolve Tool Aggregates features based on specified attributes. Use Dissolve when you want to aggregate features based on a specified attribute or attributes.

Helpful toolboxes: Data Management Toolbox cont. Append Tool Appends multiple input dataset into an already existing target dataset. Input datasets can be point, line or polygon feature classes, tables, rasters or raster catalogs.

Helpful toolboxes: Geocoding Toolbox Rebuild Address Locator Tool This tool applies the changes made to the table of attributes so that the rematch will recognize the changes.

Helpful toolboxes: Spatial Statistics Toolbox Collect Events Tools Converts event data, such as crimes or disease incidents, to weighted point data.
