Dinosaur Facts

Brontosaurus Oops! This is actually a Apatosaurus.  It was mistakenly named in the 1870's.  Now most museums do not use the name "brontosaurus". Apatosaurus means "deceptive lizard"  It was about 18 m long and weighed about 30 tons. It had a very small brain. Herbivore

Diplodocus Diplodocus is a plant eater. It has a long neck and a very long tail. The Diplodocus is one of the longest land animals. The Diplodocus walked on all four legs. Herbivore

Brachiosaurus This was one of the largest dinosaurs. It was 25m long (81 feet) and weighed about 80 tons (160,000 pounds). Brachiosaurus means "arm-lizard" Herbivore

Iguanodon One of the first known dinosaurs. It was named Iguanodon "iguana tooth" because its tooth resembled an iguana' tooth but much larger. It walked on its back legs, weighed about 7 tons (14,000 pounds) and was about 30 feet long. The Iguanodon had human like hands with a sharp thumb, he used as a  weapon.   Herbivore

Trachodon Trachodon (meaning "rough tooth") is a plant-eating dinosaur that is known only from a few teeth and jaw parts that were found in Montana, USA. From the teeth, it has been surmised that Trachodon was probably a duck-billed dinosaur (a lambeosaurine hadrosaur). Trachodon dates from the late Cretaceous period, about 77-73 million years ago. Herbivore Trachodon is a dubious genus due to the sparsity of fossils.

Triceratops Triceratops means " three horned face".  It uses them to fight their predators. Their heads were huge and about 1/3 as long as their bodies. They lived on the edge of the forest.  Herbivore

Stegasaurus Stegosaurus had a very small bird-like head compared to the rest of its huge body.  Its brain was about the size of a walnut.  Its back legs were twice as long as his front legs.  The Stegosaurus had bony plates down its back and tail.  He used his tail as a weapon. Herbivore

Ankylosaurus Ankylosaurus had a bumpy back of armor which protected him from his predators.   Predators could not penetrate his tough back.  He also had a very powerful tail.  Ankylosaurus was about 18-20 feet long and six foot high. Herbivore

Protoceratops This horned-faced dinosaur laid eggs in a sandy nest near a pond.   This dinosaur was usually part of a herd that helped protect each other.  Its sharp beak was its main defense against predators. Herbivore

Fossilized Eggs Allosaurus eggs have been found which would have contained tiny embryos Allosaurus means "different lizard," named for its unusual vertebrae, lighter than those of other dinosaurs Allosaurus was a top predator with a huge head, sharp, serrated teeth, short arms, and three-fingered hands. Carnivore

Tyrannosaurus Rex Carnivore T-Rex was one of the biggest and strongest dinosaurs.  Tyrannosaurus Rex had two very strong legs and walked upright.  He was about 20 feet high and 40 feet long.  Each foot had three toes with claws.  He had a huge head and very sharp dagger-like teeth. Carnivore

Elasmosaurus Elasmosaurus was a long-necked marine reptile that was up to 46 feet long (14 m). Half of its length was its neck, which had as many as 75-76 vertebrae in it (in comparison, people have 7-8 neck vertebrae). Elasmosaurus had four long, paddle-like flippers, a tiny head, sharp teeth in strong jaws, and a pointed tail. It was the longest of the Plesiosaurs
