Interesting Facts About Energy Use Annual energy cost is roughly equivalent to 25 assistant professors, plus 25 associate professors, plus 50 full tenured professors Campus facilities consume the equivalent of 50,000,000 pounds of coal every year, or about 6000 pounds per student per year Energy expenditures exceed that of annual capital renewal For every tuition dollar in revenue, five cents goes to energy expense Water used on campus is equivalent to filling the UC lap pool, daily GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions are approximately 110,000 tons every year, or about 25,000 pounds per student per year It takes 75,000 trees to print the Sunday edition of the NY Times! Leaving a light on uses less energy than turning it off and on several times. TRUTH. Leaving an incandescent light on actually uses more energy than turning it on and off as needed. MYTH. Keeping your thermostat at the same temperature day and night uses less energy than turning it down at night and heating your home up again in the morning. TRUTH. It takes less energy to warm up a cold home in the morning than it does to maintain a constant temperature throughout the night. MYTH. Setting your air conditioner thermostat to its lowest setting when you start it will cool your home faster. TRUTH. This won’t cool your home any faster, it’ll just use more energy.

It is more energy efficient to leave your computer running when not in use. TRUTH. Any time you turn your computer off, it will save energy; many computers have energy-saving “sleep” features that save energy when the computer is not being used.
