1st session Finding a common understanding of what Responsible Global Citizenship means in terms of knowledge skills attitudes

Emphasis on the learning process Developing critical thinking and researching rather than knowledge delivering Pupils get their knowledge and information through various channels, not only through curriculum i.e. life experience, media…. Skills cannot be just taught, and pupil learn better through opportunities and contexts Values and attitudes (such as responsible attitudes) in education are acquired more through action “From indoor to outdoor” - action oriented and transversal approach” The contribution of Global Education to Education for Sustainable Development

Understanding (social, economic, environmental, cultural) interdependencies is needed Messages and policies need to be coherent Global dimension cannot be separated from ESD A wide range of approaches is needed and is at hand to bring the global dimension in education (i.e. products in the supermarket, different nationalities in the classroom, school virtual partnership, up to the possibility to travel and visit other countries) Education cannot change everything and be aware not to shift all the responsibilities for the future on to the children The contribution of Global Education to Education for Sustainable Development

1. provide more information on both sides about resources and opportunities 2. flexibility of structure and organisation 3. provide financial support on both sides 4. take into account the expertise of NGOs for policy making Cooperation NGOs – School system

create strategy - building teams at all levels of curriculum reform identify areas for reform create a steering group to develop strategies develop agenda / white paper to develop cross curricular elements transfer to subject level, reach grassroot level all this should be reflected in teacher training role of teachers in a globalised and changing world Curriculum reform and teacher training

2 core issues to build competencies: 1. Head teachers 2. Staff awareness training for both these professional profile is needed Other important issues : - curriculum enrichment - extracurricular activities - link with Global Education, interdisciplinary approach and community involvement - students as resources, empowering students towards participation - strategic planning and political backing are needed Competencies in schools
