Newton’s Laws REVIEW

Force = Mass x Acceleration 1. A CMS student, Chris, was accelerating 4 Walmart buggies at 2 m/s². Each buggy had a mass of 100 kg. How much force was exerted on the buggies to bring them to a stop? (What are the variables?) Total Mass = 100 kg kg kg kg = 400 kg Acceleration = 2 m/s² Force = 400 kg x 2 m/s² Force = 800 N Hi: My Name is Chris. I can push 4 buggies at one time. Want to feel my triceps?

Crabby Abby Cates was riding with her Mom to Brookshires, when a dog ran into the road. Her Mom slammed on the brakes. Since Crabby Abby refuses to wear a seat belt (would wrinkle her shirt), what do you believe happened to her? Explain your answer in terms of Newton’s Laws. According to Newton’s 1 st Law, Crabby Abby will be crabbier since she will continue to move forward through the front windshield, even though the car has stop. The Law of Inertia Wins! Crabby Loses!

According to Newton’s Law of Inertia what would happen to the speed of a ball thrown by J.R. into space from the Hubble Telescope? The ball would continue in a straight line at a constant speed.

Batty Brooklan was driving down the highway when all of a sudden the man in front of her slammed on the brakes. Which would Batty Brooklan rather have 3 car lengths behind her... an 18- wheeler or a motorcycle? According to Newton’s 2 nd Law why? A motorcycle of course! According to Newton’s 2 nd Law, the greater the mass the more force it will take to accelerate. The 18-wheeler will not be able to stop in time.

A 600 kg dancing cow was pushed by a tractor with a force of 1200 N. What was the acceleration of the cow? Force = Mass x Acceleration Force = 1200 N Mass = 600 kg Acceleration = 1200 N/600 kg = 2 m/s²

Four trains traveled through Corsicana. The mass and acceleration of each train was recorded. Which train had the greatest applied force? TrainMass (kg)Acceleration (m/s²) Train kg x 10 m/s² = 9,400 N Train kg x 3 m/s² = 12,000 N Train kg x 4 m/s² = 12,800 N Train kg x 7 m/s² = 10,500 N

Force Applied (N)Acceleration (m/s²) ?9.0 At CMS students were measuring the acceleration of a baby buggy being acted on by varying forces. Data was recorded in the above table. How much force was applied to the baby buggy when the students measured an acceleration of 9.0 m/s²? F = M x A Force = 10 N Acceleration = 2.0 m/s² Mass = 10N/2.0 m/s² Mass = 5 kg Mass of baby buggy = 5 kg Acceleration = 9 m/s² Mass = 5 kg Force = 5 kg x 9 m/s² Force = 45 N
