Leaving the Old World Poland, 1897 You have decided to leave the old world and start a new life. Your father is a poor farmer, and your mother died of cholera when you were young. You will have enough money to board the ship if you can find someone to buy everything you can’t bring to America.

At the Docks A friend has agreed to buy from you anything you can’t bring to America. You now have enough money to get on the boat. Your choice is: go in third class (which costs more) and risk not having enough money in America or go in steerage (which is more crowded and less sanitary) and risk getting sick. Third class Steerage

Leaving Poland This will probably be the worst part of your voyage to America (mentally). You have to say goodbye to your family, your country, and your old life. If things go well you will never see any of these things again.

Third class When you get to your room it is almost dinnertime. Many people are going to the dining hall. You follow them and find a seat.

Play Steerage When you get to steerage, people are already playing their instruments to give people morale. You remember that you used to play the violin and many people have them and are letting people use them. Do you want to play a violin to the passengers? Don’t play

Dining Room When you get to the mess hall most people are already eating. The choices of food to eat are soup and bread (more nutritious) or some traditional Polish desserts (this is the only time these will be served). Eat soup and bread Eat dessert

Mess Hall When you finish playing the violin, it is time to go to dinner. Everyone really liked your playing, and one man even gave you some medicine so you won’t get sick on the journey. Rough Seas As the storm rages on the boat is tossed around on the waves, and you are tossed around in the boat. Finally the storm ends, and the boat stops rocking.
