Step 2 Write a thesis statement

What is a Thesis Statement?

A thesis statement… is a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph (usually the last sentence of your introduction) that presents your argument/opinion to the reader.

A thesis statement… directly answers the question asked of you (in the prompt).  A thesis is an interpretation of the question, not the subject itself.

A thesis statement… is a road map for the essay to tell the reader exactly what to expect.

Why is a Thesis Statement Important? You don’t have an essay without it.  The rest of the essay, the body paragraphs, gathers and organizes evidence directly related to your thesis.

Why is a Good Thesis Statement Important? Your reader needs to be able to follow you…
