Bib 264: Production, publication, distribution, manufacture, and copyright notice Question on RDA list (paraphrased): Guidelines indicate that if publication information is not identified, add distribution; if distribution information is not identified, add manufacturer. If none are known, are all three fields required? [Place of publication not identified] : $b [publisher not identified], $c [not before 1992] [Place of distribution not identified] : $b [distributor not identified] [Place of manufacture not identified] : $c [manufacturer not identified] Answer from LChelp4rda (paraphrased): … Implicit in the definition of ‘Core’ is the 1.3 wording: “elements that are applicable and readily ascertainable.” Not all resources give information about a distributor or manufacturer. If these statements aren’t applicable to the resource, they aren’t core. We don’t have to assume an unknown distributor or manufacturer. 15. NACO – Changes to LC/NACO authority file Acceptable differences Task group determined acceptable differences between AACR2 and RDA access points, and what access points should be accepted as RDA Accept AACR2 form without a date, even if the date is now known Accept AACR2 form with or without a fuller form in $q as an RDA acceptable form Source for this and following slides: ALCTS webinar: Programmatic changes to the LC/NACO authority file for RDA (May 2013)

Changes to LC/NACO authority file Phase 1: mark all records that are or are likely to be incompatible with RDA and which need manual review (July- August 2012) 436,943 records updated 667: THIS 1XX FIELD CANNOT BE USED UNDER RDA UNTIL THIS RECORD HAS BEEN REVIEWED AND/OR UPDATED Types of records: conference headings, $l with “polyglot” and ampersands, treaties, some personal names with $c, some music headings

Changes to LC/NACO authority file Phase 1.5: Some Phase 1 records needed to be updated before Phase 2 (completed January 2013) Most RDA 7xx fields were removed; AACR2 headings became 4xx fields About 14,700 records

Changes to LC/NACO authority file Phase 2: automated changes to records that met specific criteria (March 2013) 371,942 authority records updated Examples Dept. > Department Koran > Qurʼan Bible. $b N.T. > Bible. $b New Testament Bible. $b N.T. $b Luke > Bible. $b Luke violoncello > cello 100 … $d b. [date] > 100 … $d [date]- Changes to abbreviations: ca., cent., fl., Jan., etc. Also, records were enhanced 046 (dates), 370 (associated place), 377 (associated language), 378 (fuller form of personal name), 382 (medium of performance), 383 (numeric designation), 384 (key), 510s (cross-references) 4xx fields put in alphabetical order

Changes to LC/NACO authority file Phase 3: Recode acceptable AACR2 records as RDA (8 million records) Deferred

16. Backstage Library Works Website: Blog: Wiki: Search “RDA” to find RDA planning information Planning guides:

17. ISSN changes ISSN update from CONSER meeting at ALA (January 2013) / Regina Reynolds 1) Issuing ISSNs to new journals ISSN centers are deferring assignment of an ISSN until the first issue is published Why: Predatory open access publishers. In November, one of the publishers applied for 300 ISSNs for generic titles that sound like titles already being published; some will never be published See Beall’s List of Predatory Publishers 2013: publishers-2013/ publishers-2013/

ISSN changes 2) New policy: ISSNs are being assigned to digital reproductions E.g., JSTOR titles Exception: if there is an ISSN for a born digital copy already (a non-reproduction), that ISSN will apply to the reproduction, too The same ISSN will apply to a version for a mobile device or e- book reader The U.S. Center will assign ISSNs for all the serials in the HathiTrust Will talk to CRL about digital newspapers Journals may have an icon that indicates they are ISSN compliant

18. schema.org Launched in 2011 by Google, Bing, Yahoo! Vocabulary for coding web documents. This allows the metadata to be used in browser searches, etc. Developing specific extensions for different industries, including libraries OCLC is adding schema.org descriptive markup to WorldCat.org pages Advantage: linked bibliographic data Examples of elements found in coded information in the source code for a WorldCat.org record

19. Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms: Project updates Moving images The OLAC Cataloging Policy Committee’s Best Practices document can be found here: Spoken-word recorded sound Cartography Law 59

LCGFT: Project updates Music Approximately 750 terms have been agreed on between the Library of Congress and the Music Library Association as of February 2013 The list of terms can be found here: Religion The Library of Congress is working with the American Theological Library Association on this project This project is set to be completed by the end of the year, if not sooner Literature Approximately 800 terms have been gathered Non-Disciplinary Terms Still in beginning phases Currently gathering terms from form subdivisions 60

LCGFT/LCSH: Globes The LCGFT Globes has been expanded to permit usage for any astronomical body and the LCGFT Lunar Globes has been cancelled. Furthermore, the LCSH form heading, –Globes has been cancelled in favor of the form subdivision –Maps. The fact that a work is a spherical representation will be brought out by the LCGFT Globes LCSH term Earth is now Earth (Planet) The announcement from LC can be found here:

Medium of performance (LCMPT) The Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Music Library Association, has begun developing a thesaurus for the medium of performance of musical works – Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT) Also intended to be used as a source vocabulary for RDA’s “medium of performance” element (MARC field 382). Designed to be used independently of cataloging code or communications format Approximately 850 terms have been agreed on by the Library of Congress and Music Library Association as of February 2013 The working list of terms and a description of the project can be found here:

20. LCSH: Law and legislation In April 2013, the LC Policy and Standards Division (PSD) made the announcement that the subdivision –Law and legislation will be authorized to use under LCSH headings for crimes PSD has undertaken a project to establish headings for crimes with the subdivision –Law and legislation as well as revise existing headings and bibliographic records as necessary. The Subject Headings Manual instruction sheet H 1705 has also been revised to reflect this change The announcement can be found here:

LCSH: Subject category codes Library of Congress has undertaken an experiment to add subject category codes (072) to subject authority records, which will complement the subdivision usage codes (073) in subdivision authority records. There are three expected benefits to adding this information: 1.The usability of LCSH on the Semantic Web will be enhanced 2.It will allow ILSs and resource discovery platforms to assist catalogers in determining appropriate subdivisions for subject headings 3.It will improve automatic heading string creation and validation The experiment is currently in progress. As of December 2012, approximately 200 records have been edited 64

LCSH: Subject category codes For more information, see the original announcement here: pso/field_072_announceme nt.pdf

21. ALA Midwinter Meeting

ALA Heads of Cataloging Interest Group (January 28, 2013) Topic: Assessment Assessment in practice / Rebecca Mugridge Quantitative Assessment / Casey Cheney (Backstage Library Works)

Assessment in practice / Rebecca Mugridge The cataloging we do are pieces of scholarship; we create databases that contribute to the scholarly record; we have impact outside our libraries How can we share the value and impact of what we do? Six assessment activities at Penn State Workflow analysis and assessment with an outside facilitator CQI Improvement Team Customer service survey Interviews or focus groups Benchmarking 360 degree review

Quantitative Assessment / Casey Chaney Output Before can measure output, need goals Records per hour that one cataloger can process Before projects, project manager sets goals based on a sample, comparison with similar projects, and procedures Use a time-card system Cataloger’s must meet 80% of project average Keeps several spreadsheets with data Quality Desire high quality records Identify minor errors and major errors Major: e.g., hinders access, wrong record Minor: e.g., spacing errors in non-searchable fields Work passes or fails for the day Other reports look at production and quality in different ways: compare number of hours and measures

PCC Participants Meeting (January 27, 2013) PCC chair, Philip Schreur This is one of the most exciting times to be in the metadata business A lot happening: RDA BIBCO Standard Record Provider Neutral Records Task groups (hybrid records, relationship designators, etc.) Undifferentiated personal names Training material e-Serials module 31 New LC-PCC Policy Statements Presentations – See ALA Midwinter 2013 Presentations:
