Extraction of Tensor Asymmetry Data taking during 1 month (flip vector/tensor target polarization): 1.5 M selected events with tensor polarized target Kinematical cuts: GeV 2, GeV 2 6 bins over x Tensor asymmetry: N are the number of DIS events in the kinematical bin, L are dead-time corrected luminosity, is the tensor polarization =0.83+/ No depolarization factor, no beam polarization, because b 1 is in symmetric part of the hadronic vertex tensor

The results on A T A T is small : less that 2 % Contamination on A // is found to be less than 1% (1/2TA T ) Radiative corrections are calculated with POLRAD 2.0 (elastic tail only) The systematic uncertainties dominated by target polarization: 3%

The results on b 1 The structure function b 1 was calculated: b 1 =-3/2 A T F 1 D from NMC fit, NP B371(1992) from ALLM97 fit, Abramowicz and A.Levy, hep-ph/ The structure function R=  L   Whitlow et. al., Phys.Lett. B250(1990) No higher twist effects considered b 1 deviates from zero at low x

The results on b 2 Comparison with Bora-Jaffe prediction: K.Bora and R.Jaffe Phys.Rev. D57(1998) The electron-nucleon cross section at the starting point for Q 2 evolution by vector-meson-dominance (VMD). Shadowing due to the double-scat- tering of vector mesons, along with the presence of a d-state admixture in ground state deuteron wave function gives rise to a non vanishing contribution to b 1 (x, Q 2 ).

Conclusions The tensor asymmetry and structure functions b 1, b 2 are measured for the first time on tensor polarized atomic deuteron target at HERMES with 27.6 GeV positron beam. The measured tensor asymmetry A T is small : less than 2 % Contamination on A // is found to be less than 1% The structure function b 1 deviates from zero at low x, x<0.1 The obtained structure function b 2 is in qualitatively agreement with Bora - Jaffe prediction
