THE NEXT 3 SLIDES WILL SHOW YOU THE WORDS FOR DIFFERENT PETS IN FRENCH.

Un chat Un chien Un lapin Un poisson

Un hamster Un oiseau Un cheval Un serpent

Un cochon d’Inde Un gerbil Une araignée Une souris

UN CHAT A CAT WRITE THE DATE AND THE TITLE “LES ANIMAUX” IN YOUR BOOKS COPY EACH OF THE WORDS FOR PETS IN FRENCH AND ENGLISH. YOU CAN ADD YOUR OWN DRAWING OF EACH PET IF YOU LIKE. COPY THE WORDS FIRST AND LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE PICTURES AFTERWARDS. SET YOUR WORK OUT LIKE THIS… UN CHAT A CAT WHEN YOU HAVE DONE ALL 12 PETS, GET YOUR TEACHER TO CHECK YOUR SPELLINGS, THEN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.

“TALKING ABOUT MY PETS” TO ASK SOMEONE “DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?” IN FRENCH, THIS IS WHAT YOU SAY… “AS-TU UN ANIMAL?” IT IS PRONOUNCED “AH-TO UN A-NEE-MAL” WRITE THIS TITLE IN YOUR BOOK …. “TALKING ABOUT MY PETS” WRITE “AS-TU UN ANIMAL?” = “DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?” IN YOUR BOOK THE NEXT SLIDES WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION IN FRENCH.

J’AI UN CHAT = I HAVE A CAT TO ANSWER SOMEONE “DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?” IN FRENCH, THIS IS WHAT YOU SAY… J’AI…… = I HAVE….. FOLLOWED BY THE WORD FOR YOUR PET. FOR EXAMPLE…. J’AI UN CHAT = I HAVE A CAT J’AI UN CHIEN ET UN LAPIN = I HAVE A DOG AND A RABBIT IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY PETS, THIS IS WHAT YOU SAY… JE N’AI PAS D’ANIMAL = I DON’T HAVE ANY PETS COPY THESE EXAMPLES INTO YOUR EXERCISE BOOKS

PLURALS ARE VERY SIMILAR IN FRENCH… HOW TO SAY IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF PET – “PLURALS” MORE THAN ONE OF SOMETHING IS KNOWN AS A “PLURAL”. IN ENGLISH, TO MAKE SOMETHING PLURAL, WE ADD AN “S” TO THE WORD FOR EXAMPLE, 2 CATS, 4 DOGS, SOME RABBITS ETC. THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS OF COURSE… EG, A SHEEP, 2 SHEEP. 1 MOUSE, SOME MICE. PLURALS ARE VERY SIMILAR IN FRENCH… TO MAKE SOMETHING PLURAL YOU ADD AN “S” DEUX CHATS TROIS LAPINS DES POISSONS (= SOME FISH) AS IN ENGLISH, THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE. THE NEXT SLIDE SHOWS SOME EXAMPLES…

DEUX OISEAUX DEUX CHEVAUX DEUX SOURIS SOME DIFFERENT PLURALS IN FRENCH (IF THE WORD ALREADY HAS AN “S” ON THE END, YOU DO NOT ADD ANOTHER)

COPY THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES INTO YOUR BOOKS J’AI DEUX CHATS = I HAVE TWO CATS J’AI TROIS LAPINS = I HAVE THREE RABBITS J’AI DES POISSONS = I HAVE SOME FISH J’AI DEUX OISEAUX = I HAVE TWO BIRDS J’AI DEUX CHEVAUX = I HAVE TWO HORSES J’AI DEUX SOURIS = I HAVE TWO MICE NOW WRITE IN FRENCH A SENTENCE SAYING WHAT PETS YOU HAVE. ALTHOUGH FRENCH AND ENGLISH ARE SIMILAR WITH THEIR PLURALS, IN FRENCH, THE “S” IS SILENT WHEN PRONOUNCED. NOW HAVE A GO AT THE EXERCISES ON THE NEXT SLIDES TO PRACTISE THESE PHRASES…

WRITE A SENTENCE IN FRENCH BASED ON EACH PICTURE WRITE A SENTENCE IN FRENCH BASED ON EACH PICTURE. SET YOUR WORK OUT LIKE THE EXAMPLE. x4 x3 x2 J’ai deux chiens 1. 2. Example x1 x1 + x2 x4 + 3. 4. 5. some some x2 + some 8. 6. 7. x5 x1 x2 + + some + 10. 9. some

Some extra information to read. Make notes in your books if you like. Une souris Un chat = A mouse = A cat Did you notice anything different about the French word for “a” with these pets? That’s right, one says “un”, the other says “une”. They both mean “a” so why are they different? In French all nouns (person, place or things) are known as either Masculine or Feminine. Read the next slide carefully as it will explain more keywords

Every NOUN in French is either Masculine or Feminine READ THIS SLIDE VERY CAREFULLY Every NOUN in French is either Masculine or Feminine A noun is a person, place or thing. Any word that you can put the word “a” or “the” in front. In French, the words for “a” and “the” are different, depending on if the word is masculine or feminine. ENGLISH MASCULINE FEMININE A UN UNE THE LE LA REMEMBER: It is the “word” itself which is either masculine or feminine. You might own a female cat, but the word for “cat” in French will always be masculine. How do you know if a word is masculine or feminine? You have to learn them!! When you learn a new noun in French, you will always learn it with the extra words “UN”, “UNE”, “LE” or “LA”. Just like you did with the words for pets.
