HOW TO SAY IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF PET – “PLURALS” MORE THAN ONE OF SOMETHING IS KNOWN AS A “PLURAL”. IN ENGLISH, TO MAKE SOMETHING PLURAL, WE ADD AN “S” TO THE WORD FOR EXAMPLE, 2 CATS, 4 DOGS, SOME RABBITS ETC. THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS OF COURSE… EG, A SHEEP, 2 SHEEP. 1 MOUSE, SOME MICE. PLURALS ARE VERY SIMILAR IN FRENCH… TO MAKE SOMETHING PLURAL YOU ADD AN “S” DEUX CHATS TROIS LAPINS DES POISSONS (= SOME FISH) AS IN ENGLISH, THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE. THE NEXT SLIDE SHOWS SOME EXAMPLES…

3 DEUX OISEAUX DEUX CHEVAUX DEUX SOURIS SOME DIFFERENT PLURALS IN FRENCH
(IF THE WORD ALREADY HAS AN “S” ON THE END, YOU DO NOT ADD ANOTHER)

4 COPY THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES INTO YOUR BOOKS

6 Some extra information to read. Make notes in your books if you like.
Une souris Un chat = A mouse = A cat Did you notice anything different about the French word for “a” with these pets? That’s right, one says “un”, the other says “une”. They both mean “a” so why are they different? In French all nouns (person, place or things) are known as either Masculine or Feminine. Read the next slide carefully as it will explain more keywords

7 Every NOUN in French is either Masculine or Feminine
READ THIS SLIDE VERY CAREFULLY Every NOUN in French is either Masculine or Feminine A noun is a person, place or thing. Any word that you can put the word “a” or “the” in front. In French, the words for “a” and “the” are different, depending on if the word is masculine or feminine. ENGLISH MASCULINE FEMININE A UN UNE THE LE LA REMEMBER: It is the “word” itself which is either masculine or feminine. You might own a female cat, but the word for “cat” in French will always be masculine. How do you know if a word is masculine or feminine? You have to learn them!! When you learn a new noun in French, you will always learn it with the extra words “UN”, “UNE”, “LE” or “LA”. Just like you did with the words for pets.
