SAMMY SMITH SLEEPS Written by: Matigan and Selene Stop Silly Snorers Inc. Publishing Company 2014

Sammy Smith was a sleepy little boy in the sixth grade. He lived in New Jersey with his mommy, daddy, and little brother Tommy.

Sammy’s teacher was Mrs. Shuper. Mrs. Shuper was the hardest and meanest teacher in Sammy’s school. She always gave tests and homework. Sammy hated her.

Mrs. Shuper didn’t like Sammy either. He was always falling asleep in class and during tests! Mrs. Shuper was not happy with Sammy… EVER!

Everyday in the middle of her class, Mrs. Shuper would have to stop her lesson and say, “Sammy Smith! Stop snoring and start learning!” Then, Sammy would sit straight up, wipe the drool from his cheek and mumble, “Sorry Mrs. Shuper.”

One day, after her bagillionth time waking Sammy up, Mrs. Shuper decided to send a note home to Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sammy is always falling asleep during class and he is falling behind. Please find a way to fix this problem as soon as possible. Thanks. Your Friend and Teacher, Mrs. Shuper

“Sammy, “Why didn’t you tell me and Daddy you were having a hard time staying up during class?”

“I didn’t want you guys to be mad at me!

“Sammy, “Why didn’t you tell me and Daddy you were having a hard time staying up during class?” “I didn’t want you guys to be mad at me! “Sammy, we just want you to get and education. That means you have to stay awake during class.”

“Sammy, “Why didn’t you tell me and Daddy you were having a hard time staying up during class?” “I didn’t want you guys to be mad at me! “Sammy, we just want you to get and education. That means you have to stay awake during class.” “I know Mom but, I just cant keep my eyes open in school but, at night, I’m wide awake!”

“Sammy, “Why didn’t you tell me and Daddy you were having a hard time staying up during class?” “I didn’t want you guys to be mad at me! “Sammy, we just want you to get and education. That means you have to stay awake during class.” “I know Mom but, I just cant keep my eyes open in school but, at night, I’m wide awake!” “Hmm…”

Sammy and his Mommy and Daddy came up with a list of possible solutions to Sammy’s sleeping problem. Sammy’s Sleeping Solutions 1.Drink coffee in the morning 2.Go to bed at 9:30 and wake up at 7:30 every day 3.Eat a healthy breakfast every morning 4.Drink lots of water throughout the day 5.Chew on something during class

“Daddy, how is this stuff going to make Sammy stay awake?

Well Tommy, coffee has caffeine in it which makes you wake up and stay up, going to bed and waking up at the same time every day creates a steady sleep schedule which will allow your brain to remember when you’re supposed to sleep and when you’re supposed to be awake. Eating a healthy breakfast gives your body the energy it needs to get through the day. Drinking lots of water throughout the day and chewing on something keeps your mind alert and wake so you don’t feel sleepy.

On Monday, Sammy drank coffee to see if it would help him stay awake at school…it didn’t.

On Tuesday, Sammy ate an extra special healthy breakfast to see it that would keep him awake…once again it didn’t work. Thanks Mom!

On Wednesday, Sammy tried chewing ice in class…IT WORKED but, Mrs. Shuper yelled at him for eating in class.

On Thursday, Sammy tried drinking water during class…Mrs. Shuper yelled at him AGAIN and Sammy had to pee…a lot!

“May I go to the bathroom??”

Finally on Friday, Sammy decided he would begin to adjust his sleeping schedule so, that night, he went to bed at 9:30 p.m. on the dot. Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. Sammy’s mom came in to wake him up.

Sammy continued doing this routine for the next week, AND IT WORKED. Sammy couldn’t be happier. Since he wasn’t falling asleep in class, he got straight As by the end of the year and all it took was a slight adjustment to his sleep schedule.
