SSI MDSS capabilities Today and Beyond Surface Systems, Inc. Jon Tarleton & Bob Dreisewerd

RWIS and MDSS Larger network of RWIS increases MDSS effectiveness RWIS – MDSS Training Similarities –Computer Technology –RWIS not complete tool?

SSI RWIS Advancements Newer RWIS Platform –Very Expandable (Traffic, Homeland Security) –More reliable –Easier to maintain –Device Control capabilities

Pavement Sensor Options Thermo SCAN –Pavement Temperature Only GroundHog – Inpavement Wireless Traffic Sensor FP 2000 – SSI making improvements to the sensors reporting capabilities.

SSI Forecast Services Overview  Use of improved weather modeling (utilization of higher resolution models and ensemble forecasts) as the basis for all forecast products.  Use of experienced meteorologists to correct model forecast grids, esp. during the short term.  Proven pavement forecast modeling experience. An accurate forecast is the foundation of a successful MDSS

SSI’s current version of MDSS Storm Logic  Partnership between SSI and Asset Insight Technologies (AIT)  Test viability  Get something to market which is easy to use and understand.  2 nd full winter with 3x number of customers from 1 st year.  AIT provided Treatment Strategy Matrix based on modified FHWA rules of practice.  The AIT maintenance treatment strategy is appended to the SSI SCAN*Cast recommending pre-storm, during storm, and a post-storm treatment strategy for particular site based on “best practices”  Strategy is modified as forecast is updated or changes

Storm Logic forecast considerations  Pre-storm  Precipitation type and intensity (rain or no rain)  Pavement temperature  Wind speed  During storm  Precipitation type and intensity  Pavement temperature and trends  Post-storm  Wind speed  Pavement temperature until dry pavement

 Guidance on how to best treat roadway to optimize safety and costs (material/labor)  Training tool for agencies just getting started in anti-icing programs or for new supervisors  User friendly approach – easy to understand Benefits of Storm Logic

Based on current customer feedback: 1.Customization of treatment recommendations based on individual agencies. 2.Enhanced road condition and treatment recommendations to provide more specific recommendation timing during the next 24 hours – incorporate modules from MDSS prototype. Future Development
