Romans 1:8-17

R O M A N S chapter one: 8-17 Paul’s appointment as apostle: “separated to the gospel of God” [1:1] “…for obedience to the faith…” [1:5] “for the Jew first and also for the Greek” “…among all nations (the Gentiles)…” [1:5] “…among whom you also (Romans)…” [1:6] “…are the called of Jesus…to be saints” [1:6-7] Gentiles = “Saints” [Ex 19:5-6; 1 Pt 2:9-10] ? As God promised [Rm 1:2-4; Ac 15:15-17] Therefore…

R O M A N S chapter one: 8-17 “First…” (first things first!) [1:8] “I thank my God through Jesus Christ”: “…for you all” “for the Jew first and also for the Greek” “…that your faith is spoken of…whole world” It was of first priority for Paul to do 2 things: (1) thank God [cp. Col 3:17; 1 Th 5:17-18] (2) tell them of it [cp. Eph 1:15-16; Ph 1:3-5] “All roads lead to Rome” [and also from it!] Their obedience was “for His name” [cp 1:5] God is glorified in their faith by their obeying cp. Rom 16:19; 1 Thess 1:2-10; etc.

R O M A N S chapter one: 8-17 “First…” (first things first!) [1:8] “I thank my God…for…your faith…” They couldn’t see him praying, but God did! “for the Jew first and also for the Greek” Paul fully believed in prayer, would need theirs “For God is my witness…” [1:9-10] Of my constant prayer for you [v. 9] cp. Rm 15:25-32; Ac 20:22-23; 2 Cor 8:1-4 Of my desire to come to you [v. 10] Paul’s work had “hindered” him [15:20-22] Not a lack of interest in them – cp. 1:13

R O M A N S chapter one: 8-17 “First…” (first things first!) [1:8] “I thank my God…for…your faith…” “for the Jew first and also for the Greek” “For God is my witness…” [1:9-10] Of my prayers and desire for you To “impart…some spiritual gift” [v. 11] “that you may be established” [2 Pt 1:12-15] likely not miraculous gifts, but the Word itself “For I long to see you” [1:11-15]

11] “For I long to see you” [1:11-15] “…together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.” [apostle needed them] “that I may be encouraged…” [v. 12] Real growth needs mutual faith! [1 Cor 1:10]

11] “For I long to see you” [1:11-15] Paul’s desire was to “establish” those at Rome “that I may be encouraged…” [v. 12] “that I might have some fruit…” [v. 13] by means of the gospel! [Ph 3:1; Eph 4:11-16]

11] “For I long to see you” [1:11-15] Rome: the world’s power over all “For I am not ashamed…” [1:16-17] Gospel: God’s power to all who believe

Romans 1:16-17 The Gospel is… “the power of God to salvation” [spiritual] “for everyone” [universal; Jew and Greek] “for everyone who believes” [conditional] “in it the righteousness of God is revealed” [judicial] “(as being) from faith” [conditional] “(in order to, unto) to faith” [providential] “The JUST (righteous) shall live BY FAITH”
