Presentation transcript:

Place your top 5 favourite historical events onto a piece of paper (one piece per event). What is ‘historical significance’?

‘Historical significance’ Remarkable ‘remarked upon by people at the time’. Remembered ‘event was important at some stage in history within the collective memory of a group or groups’. Resulting in change ‘it had consequences for the future’. Revealing ‘of some other aspect of the past’.

What is History? The American poet, Ralph Emerson wrote "There is properly no history - only biography". The eighteenth century French writer, Voltaire wrote, "All our ancient history is no more than accepted fiction." And the twentieth century Austrian-born philosopher, Karl Popper wrote, "There is no history of mankind, there are only many histories of all kinds of aspects of human life. And one of these is the history of political power. This is elevated into the history of the world.“ Do you agree?

Role of the historian? *What is the relationship between the historian and the history he / she studies? *Is it possible for historians to find out historical truth? *Key strength and weaknesses of the argument.
